there are countless war heroes lost to the times by the beliefs of the people who wrote history, please I would like to know more on that time period and of Native Americans who went above and beyond the call of duty

I notice that as I go back into histories that armies are more concentrated and single battles are more decisive. What's the reason for this?

The song "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" was released in 1963, and discusses "scary ghost stories". Born in '91, I've never seen this as part of any of my near or extended families traditions, nor any of friend families
Was this actually a part of Christmas past? If so, where did it begin and why did it fall out of the mainstream?
Thank you!

Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in the American south of 1900. At one point a man and a lady pay to see a silent movie. The theater seats maybe 100 and they are only joined by 2 or 3 other patrons.
As the movie plays, they make idle conversation to one another like ‘can you believe that’ and other simple comments. They are shushed multiple times, but the only other noise is a simple soundtrack accompanying the scene (being played live?) They aren’t being loud or vulgar.
Was this kind of shushing commonplace in silent movies?

It seems to me like the rainy winter season in the UK would favour an indoor sport like Basketball, and as such it would have a fairly popular league when the football/soccer season isn't going on. Is there a reason why Spain, Turkey, and Balkan nations have adopted Basketball much more than the UK?
Thanks!!!

I’m curious about why some English language churches recite the Lord’s Prayer using the phrase “forgive us our trespasses” while others say “forgive us our debts.” My father, who has been reading the fifth and sixth volumes of David Hume’s History of England, is very interested in whether it has any connection to religious conflict during the English Civil War, and I’d really appreciate it if my favorite subreddit could provide any insight one way or the other. Thank you for taking the time to read my question!

Judging by the quotes compiled here, it seems Xenophon is the object of a contempt normally reserved for undergrads. What's the deal with that? What makes his work allegedly so much worse than i.e. Thucydides?

Hi there r/AskHistorians! I'm a History major and am currently working on a paper about Dr. Martin Luther King and his anti-Vietnam war stance. I'd really like to include quotes from the clip below where he discusses other civil rights leaders taking opposing positions, but I can't find the original source/date! If anyone had thoughts on where to look, or if anyone might happen to know where this clip originally came from or was filmed, it would be so incredibly appreciated. Thank you!

If there isn't a consensus, is there a textbook or set of books that could shed the most light possible on the subject matter that Gums Germs and Steel attempts to cover?

Hi everyone. I couldn’t find an answer on the internet to this, but does anyone know what determined which branch of the military you were drafted into during WWII?

Take for example I am a baron in late 15th century Hungary. I am in control of a modest-sized county. By this point how many florins do I bring in per year in income? Or (even by this date) are most taxes still paid in lifestock, crops, etc? Did the crown bring in most of its revenues through taxes or mining? Thanks for any responses: hard to find information on this!

Are there any writings from the time about the image of the ideal male figure?

Is anyone able to translate this? I had my friend from Israel try to translate it as I thought it was Arabic, but he thinks its Hebrew (cursive) and his dad thinks its neither.I originally thought this was a bi-product of the Arab & Nazi alliance in the 2nd world war, now I'm just plain baffled
It was left to me by my father who passed away in 2015, he always told me it was Arabic.
I have included pictures of every angle of the writing because I'm just plain not sure if its the right way up or not

I heard an interesting story about Greek island of Lemnos where people still considered themselves as Roman citizens in 1912.
When the island was occupied by the Greek navy, Greek soldiers were sent to the villages and stationed themselves in the public squares. Some of the children ran to see what these Greek soldiers, these Hellenes looked like. ‘‘What are you looking at?’’ one of them asked. ‘‘At Hellenes,’’ we replied. ‘‘Are you not Hellenes yourselves?’’ he retorted. ‘‘No, we are Romans."
It seems very unlikely that after fall of Byzantine Empire people the island did not have any influence from outside world for more than 400 years. Is there any proof that this story is true ?

For my class, we are making a medieval village and I need reliable info for my tavern. The websites that pull up on google have info on the tavern itself but I need info like: Why was the tavern important? What tools, jobs, skills, or training would be important to the tavernkeeper. If you have any links or just straight info I would appreciate.
