In westerns, everyone always orders “a beer” or “a shot”. How close was their beer to modern day beer? What kind of hard alcohol was most common and what does it most closely resemble today?

To add on to that, did every area have there own “home brew” which is why they just say beer? Were there certain brands back then that were distributed or just whatever they made that day? Same with hard alcohol?

Greco Roman wars and conquest.

As far as I understand known history in ancient world the Greeks were conquered by the Romans. Before this happened there was the Trojan wars in which the unified greek states conquered and destroyed the Trojan leadership. I've read that its theorized that the Trojans who survived went on to found Rome? If that's true then is the Roman conquests of greece were just payback for the trojan wars?

Why Aren't the Nazi Genocides of Slavs Talked about/Acknowledged as genocides?

It seems to me that if the Armenian genocide is going to be recognized as a genocide (as it generally is, and ought to be), so too should the Nazi genocide of Slavic peoples in WWII. There were specific German plans to eliminate the Polish people (through mass murder, slavery, liquidation of Polish culture, and the integration of a small minority of 'racially valuable' Poles into German identity) and these were partially implemented, hence something like 3 million non-Jewish Poles died in WWII. And then there is the deliberate starvation and extermination through labor of millions of Russian POWs.

I have a question about excavation of native American artifacts on my land.

Hello all,

I have land in north/central Texas that is known to have had a history with the comanche people. I am not very knowledgeable of other tribes that may have been present, but the Comanche tribe is the most well known.

There are around 15 "teepee rings" on an elevated area of my land. I was told by my neighbors that these were made to keep water out of the inside of the tent, by way of keeping a barrier from rain water washing inside.

Are any of these things I've been told realistic? Did these people use these types of simple mounds in this way? The rings are very prominent from the surrounding area, and by all I can tell are man made.

This brings me to a few more questions, how does asking a local university to excavate these mounds work? Could they/the state eminent domain a part of my land for research or something? Do the artifacts belong to the state, tribe, or other entity? Also would there be any artifacts near these mounds at all? Are there laws against disturbing this type of mound?

I know much of this is relevant to Texas law, but I thought I should ask here first and then go from there.

Thank you all for your time

Evan Hadfield (Rare Earth) claimed that the Tokugawa of Japan were aware of "Spains activities in the Philippines" and this influenced their closed door policies. Is he accurate in this claim?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE_vwhcPBis

4:30 in he makes the claim:

And so in the 17th century the civil war ends and Japan unites. And having seen what Spain was doing in the Philippines, how they'd been using religion to take over the country, [gestures "no"] they decided enough was enough.

Is he accurate? Were the government of Japan aware of whatever Spain was up to so far away from Japan's shores? (I know very little of what Spain were doing in the first place.)

In the Roman Empire could a free person move from one area of the empire to another?

I'm specifically thinking of the flight of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus from Palestine to Egypt to escape Herod, but this question would apply to any situation. Could free people legally get up and move from one area of the empire to another? Were there legal hurdles?

Why does Pliny say that Nero deified Claudius to ridicule him?

Being deified doesn't seem like a very scathing mockery to me. I'm talking about Pliny the Younger's Panegyricus to Trajan, 11.3 and 11.4.

Need help with images from my Italian Great Grandfathers photo

Hey everyone!

Link to photo(prob wrong way of doing this - sorry pretty new to reddit) - Photo

So My Great Grandfather Giuseppe was born in Italy in the Caserta-Napoli area and immigrated to the USA at some point prior to World War I. Near the end of WWI , Giuseppe enlisted in the United States Army, but from what we were told the war ended prior to him being deployed. After the war he returned back to Italy, started a family, and passed away from an illness when my Grandfather was only a small child. So we don't have too many facts about his time in the USA aside from (now long dead) relatives who were in Italy at the time he was in America.

Now this is where I need help. What we do have is a photo of him in his army uniform which has a boarder around it with a few different images. The photo was always at my Grandfather's house, but I never truly looked at it until my cousin got the photo copied and framed for everyone in the family as a gift. In it you will notice some things I found odd. The American Eagle is at the top with a "e pluribus unum" scroll, but instead of the traditional olive branch and arrow it seems to be perched on top of what looks to me the be the Italian Fascist logo, and surrounded by the Italian and American Flags. Also the heart with a black star at the bottom, not sure if it has any significance. The rest of the images seem just like war time stages for the soldiers ( with family, fighting, reunited with loved one).

It seems odd because, unless I'm wrong, The Fascists party doesn't get founded until 1921-22 while WWI has been over for about 3 years at this point. So the symbolism in the photo doesn't fit the time frame of world war 1. Also if its an official army photo (not sure how photos were done back then) the mix of the Italian and American imagery is odd. I also thought the US and Italy were considered enemies during the Fascist rule (maybe that came later as well)

I did a bunch of research on google but couldn't find much, so not sure if anyone could shed any light on the photo.

Also related to my Great Grandfather. Is there any place where we could find his enlistment documents from about 100 years ago? He is the reason my Mother's side of family was able to immigrate to the USA- due to his service in the army his family was able to become citizens. His name is even on a WWI memorial in town showing he served, Yet we have never had it verified or have any formal documents showing he ever enlisted.

TL;DR- Have a photo of my Italian Great Grandfather in a US army uniform with American and (I believe) Fascist images and I'm not sure what the images surrounding the photo means. Imagery also doesn't fit in the same time period. Also interested in finding his Military/enlistment documents from WWI.

Did America cause WW2?

I'm talking with my girlfriend and she stated that America was a direct cause of WW2 and Hitler's Rise. The Wall Street crash and subsequent calling in of loans was the most direct reason and not (What I was led to believe) the Treaty of Versailles?

It seems that the only thing I can find on this is "controversial" topics about it, but my girlfriend presents a very strong case for it but as I said, I was under the assumption anger of the Treaty of Versailles was more responsible.

Why didn't King George relent?

Why didn't King George just give the colonists representation in parliament? Given the fact that other colonies had representation (like India), it wouldn't have been unreasonable. America might still be a part of the British Empire had he made that decision.

For example, ancient Egyptian. I know we were able to learn to read the language after the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, but how do we know the pronunciation? When watching history shows, or even movies, Egyptian has a distinct sound. How do we know words like "Tutankhamun" are pronounced the way they are?

Is there an account of a Gestapo officer telling a Jewish woman to choose which of her children would go to Auschwitz?

I've had someone reference a scenario where a Jewish mother was told by a Gestapo officer, to choose between her 8 year old daughter or her 12 year old son.

I can't find any reference to this happening. It also seems hugely unlikely. Surely they all go. Apparently it's a "famous story" but I'd like to know more if it's true or to know it's rubbish if so.

Why didn't Romania and Moldova reunite after the soviet union collapsed?

The people of Moldova speak Romanian. Up until Stalin stole Moldova while everyone was panicking about the whole "Hitler" thing, Moldova was a part of Romania. So why didn't Romania and Moldova reunite like East and West Germany did after the Soviet Union collapsed?

It's not like Russia could stop or would them, as Russia seemed to mostly just be interested in Transnistria. So why to Romania and Moldova remain separate to this very day? Was it an economic thing? I know there's a lot of resistance in South Korea to reunification with the North because North Korea is broke and would fuck up the South Korean economy if they were to ever reunify, and Moldova is the poorest country in Europe from what I understand. (If only because Transnistria doesn't count as a country.)

Why were inhabitants of the Hebrides and Shetland Islands so opposed to joining the European Union in 1975?

Reposting this question because it has not been previously answered: looking at a map of the UK's referendum for EU membership in 1975, it seems like voters in nearly all regions were generally in favor of joining the EU, with the notable exception of the inhabitants of the Hebrides and Shetland Islands. Why was EU membership especially controversial in those regions, and how did opinions there change in subsequent decades?
