Who is in this photo?

I belong to a group on Facebook, and one of the members uploaded this photo a family member had in a frame.

Written on the photo are the names Renita & Velente/Valenti/Velento, etc.

https://imgur.com/1cJoWb4

Based on the image, and subsequent image searches, the likelihood is that Renita is Renita Kramer, a relatively famous (for her time) dancer that performed a one-woman dance routine dressed as both a man and a woman.

That said, I can't identify the male dancer. It does not appear to be Rudolph Valentino, despite the number of hits. I can't find anything online that provides a list of stage dancers/performers in New York during that time period (late 1920's - 1940's).

So, I'm hoping this Reddit might be able to provide an answer to the question of, who is the young male dancer?

Could a really skilled knight or swordsman really take on and kill 5 or so other opponents at a time? Or is that just movie bs?

Gallowglass, Highland, Gaelic Warrior Culture, and Druids

Just looking for some very interesting books on the aforementioned topics. I’m fascinated with the Gaelic Clans and there warfare from Ireland and Scotland and just want to learn as much as I possibly can about their culture and specifically their warrior culture. The Picts and Druids are extremely interesting as well. Would love the recommendations on thebest books on these subjects. I am tired of searching these topics only to find Highlander romance novels.

Wasn't Germany economically crippled after WW1? So where did it get the money required to go on its conquests in WW2? Surely you need lots of money to wage all that war so successfully?

And if Germany's military success wasn't due to wealth, why was it so successful militarily?

How did mounted archers limit self-inflicted casualties during chaotic battles?

I've always wondered how civilizations like the Mongolians and Scythians (who favored horse archery) prevented casualties during battle. I would have to imagine that their battles would be quite chaotic with so many mounted troops, and with all of those arrows flying around, were there any special tactics or methods used to The prevent these kinds of losses? Or Maybe these mounted battles were more organized and not as chaotic as I’d imagine them to be.

If there were a significant number of self-inflicted casualties in battle, are there any historical accounts of a situation in which "friendly fire" dictated the result of a battle?

How did coins circulate before paper money?

I'm wondering on the details and technicalities about pre-paper currency monetary systems, basically in any state or culture.

So mints would create new coins. Would they create them using metals from the state's coffers? Would the created coins go straight to the state?

I'm assuming the state would then pay it's employees (bureaucrats, soldiers, etc.), and then they would buy goods like food and clothing and the coins would distribute across the economy.

What would drive a state to need to debase it's coins? Running out of precious metals to send to the mints?

What did people think the sun was before the idea/evidence that it was burning gas? (Aside from being a god/magic of some sort)

Edit: I’m wondering about European and Chinese peoples particularly, since my current knowledge of those regions makes me think they were generally the world leaders in technology. I’m also aware that Arabic cultures made a lot of contributions to astronomy, so if you know something of them I’d be delighted to hear it.

Book about how Africa was turned Christian in colonial times?

Please recommend a book about how parts of Africa which are now very Christian became so during modern history, and about how African Christianity developed distinctively. (I am aware that there was also ancient African Christianity, and that other religions and beliefs are also prominent in Africa.) Thanks!

In many cities today, pre-war apartments are very valuable and stating that an apartment is pre-war is a major selling point. How did WWII change architure and construction techniques so much that a building can be labeled “pre-war” or “post-war?”

Why is Africa for the most part so underdeveloped?

I really don’t have much to add on along with the question but me being African American, many other black people seem to blame white people or Europeans for the majority of Africa being a “shithole”. But it seems as though the only “good” parts of Africa are parts where Whites and mixed race people make a decent percentage of the population.

In the New Battlefield V Trailer, a women is seen fighting as a British Soldier. Is this realistic for the British army or armies at the time to have women as frontline soldiers ?

As far as i know women played a very important role in the economy, air defence and medical service close to the front. I am asking the question because with 2 big franchises Call of Duty and now Battlefield introducing women to the battlefield it is a bit weird suddenly hearing women screaming in pain.

What was the organizational structure of the Dutch East India Company? Who were the presidents, and were there even presidents, or CEOs, etc.?

I've always been fascinated with the VOC, and I was wondering how it was structured. Did it have CEOs, CFOs, etc. in the traditional sense, or was it something different?

France made Algeria part of the metropole, which I figure is the reason the war was so bitter in the 1950s-60s compared to her other North African colonies. The protectorates came later with fewer colonists, but did France plan on making both Tunisia & Morocco part of the metropole like Algeria?

How robust were the Nazis’ medical experiments on the inmates in the camps? Are any of the findings still used in current medical science?

Read this Wikipedia article and it seems that the Nazis did some seemingly pointless experiments (such as trying to change eye colour), but also some useful-sounding experiments on the prevention and treatment of hypothermia. Is any of it still used?

Why did some people in the early modern era (specifically, 16th C.) spell their own names differently each time? Wouldn't they know how to spell their 'true' name?

I'm currently reading early modern English and Spanish correspondence and no one spells their first and last name consequently. It's "Willoughby", "Wyllughby",'Willobhy", "Lorenzo", "Lorence", "Laurence", "Lorens" etc. They're all learned and literate people. Why do they do this?

Why can't I find very much information about the 14th Century black death in Asia?

I've tried to do some research on the Black Death, everything says it started in China and came to Europe. I can't seem to find anything more about it actually being in China, India and the Middle East than "lots of people died." But in Europe we have dates, percentages of populations that were wiped out, how it affected society and the economy of the time. Was it less devastating in Asia, or did it not have the same impact, and why can't I seem to find this information?
