It seems a little weird to me that Germany and Japan call themselves Deutchland and Nippon.

Hey, I'm searching for good comprehensive literature on the industrial revolutions, and continuing industrial progress. I'm less interested in a certain revolution or invention, but in a bigger picture. It's important to me, that it at least touches on ecological influences of industrial inventions in a broader perspective. Some interesting topics might be deforestation, pollution etc. I'm asking here because I'm especially interested in the connection to industrial progress. I'm also not interested in reading some fancy politically motivated biased stuff by some hippies. I'd rather read something by an author taken seriously as a historian by the scientific community. It's allright if it's controversial but it shouldn't be by the one guy everyone is laughing about. I read that Pomerantz' Great Divergence covers that topic a bit, but I'd like to read more on it or hear, what you think about that book. I also read one book called "The Song of the Dodo" by David Quammen, which was extremely pleasant, but it's more of a science history book and covers a lot of biology and evolution theory and touches nothing of Industrial Progress. I don't mind getting something with an interesting narrative or something that's pleasant to read, but it shouldn't be inaccurate. I also ordered "The sixth extinction" but still, there might be a lot missing when it comes to technological progress. Thanks !

I’d like to try reading up on former presidents and while I understand that there are going to be differences in opinion and interpretation of their actions does anyone have a list of the “best” biographies of US Presidents?

I've been looking into the history of the Brandlings of Gosforth, one of the families of the 'Grand Allies', who were basically a cartel of wealthy families or families who were dubbed 'wealthy commoners' of coal mines in Northeast England in the 17th to 18th century. I'm having trouble finding more information about these families. I'm surprised and curious as to why there isn't more information about them, both on genealogy as well as what mines or collieries they owned. Is it simply because they weren't necessarily nobles or was it because the information was lost or so minuscule that it didn't matter? Here's the information I have found so far: http://englandsnortheast.co.uk/CoalMiningandRailways.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandling_of_Newcastle

Hey there!
Like the title suggests, I'm looking for a either complete or partial inventory list of a 80s/90s West Coast grocery store, with a praxis towards the beer on offer. I'm currently in the middle of writing a paper on the development of Craft Brewing, and I'm at a loss to finding the numbers, or names of packaged beers available in grocery stores.
Any advice on finding primary sources related to this would be incredibly appreciated.

Did they have special equipment? drugs? was it genetics? I can't find much about the Finnish soldiers besides the fact that they built saunas everywhere. that can't be the only thing, though. could it?

After hearing about how Rome valued the military life so highly, and how Carthage was based more around money and mercenaries, I'm curious if they looked at each other as "those bloodthirsty Romans" and "those rich, fat Phoenicians", or if they saw each other in a more positive light.

Hey everyone. I know this may not be appropriate for this subreddit and I'll remove it if this is an issue, but would anyone know what this blue stamp is on this 78 record? It's heading over from Japan and I'd like to know if there's any significance to it.
This is the best photo I could get, unfortunately. I don't know too much on this record, but I'm certain it was pressed in the 1930s.
If anyone is interested, the song featured is "Warship March." (Not the exact song on the record, but the closest sounding I could find.)

I've read A Traveller's History of Mexico a couple years ago and I'm starting to get interested in Mexican history again, and would like to read something else still general but more comprehensive. However, any book you can recommend me about Mexican history that's good will be helpful to me. Thank you.

In my high school, shop class was eliminated and my graduating class was the last to experience this (2005). We never had home economics. My boss had electronics back in his day (80s-90s). Why did schools and ministries decide it's a good idea to eliminate these practical skills classes and what were the reasoning?
In order to not break rule 2: given the variety of classes/education systems it could be some classes were eliminated < 20 years ago. However I can say for certain through personal experience there was no home economics in my school (QC) > 20 years ago.
In order not to break rule 3: I am specifying the whole country when in fact education is controlled provincially - just the first instance(s) in any province is good (bonus points if the explanation tells how other provinces followed suit!).
English or French sources/articles are welcome!

I was rewatching the Pacific again and got to wondering, on these Pacific islands did the troops have to be concerned about wildlife at all?
Obviously the show covers the crabs on Pelielu and I imagine there were leeches and such but I'm more wondering about things such as wildcats and other large predatory creatures.

When i mean “most used” I’m referring to all the non-romance languages that adopted the writing system.

Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

For instance, if one traveled to the other’s home, would they act in what we would consider a racist manner. I’m trying to figure out if the hate started as a result of the widespread use of slavery or existed prior.

Just visited it and heard a lot of its history, being so powerful with a large navy, stable government etc for most of its lifespan, why didn't it begin colonizing Africa? It was right across the Mediterranean from them and the only real competition they had were other Italian states and the ottoman empire.

Vito Scalleta gets caught robbing a jewelry store at 18 years old in 1943, and rather than going to jail he joins the paratroopers in the invasion of Sicilly. Was this an actual practice, to offer petty criminals an alternative as military service? Would rapists, murderers, etc be offered the same option?
