Need information on 482eme Regiment de Pionniers Coloniaux (French)

Hello,

In the midst of my dissertation research and I keep coming across this French unit stationed in Montelimar during 1939 after mobilization.

Can anyone point me to a resource with more information on the unit? Perhaps also its battlefield performance during the Battle of France, where its soldiers came from, etc? I suppose a unit history. Thanks!

Can you recommend me some XX century books?

Hi reddit, I'm new at history, so i wanted to start some late modern history books (sorry my english is so bad hahaha), I added to my list Postwar by Tony Judt which really caught my attention, I also heard of "History of the XX century" by Eric Hobsbawm. The problem is that this is going to be my first book of this kind (although I know pretty much of history for someone who didn't read anything) so i was worried if some of these books would be hard to read.

It would be so cool if any of you can recommend me good history books to start with, no problem if they are a little hard to read, I just dont wanna those books that you read 5 pages and have to take a break hahaha

(Sorry for my english again lol)

Help identifying an old (Spanish) coin I found in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

I found this coin on the ground in a small village in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico. It was on the site of an old house that burned down, so I’m guessing someone found the coin nearby, brought it home, and then lost it in the fire. I was wondering if anyone could identify the crest on it or when the coin was minted. I‘m pretty sure it was made by the Spanish, but I haven’t been able to figure out anything else. https://imgur.com/a/Qed5y/

Why did the Medieval Church have such a strong position on the issue of solar system?

Unless my assumption is wrong, which is that Bible doesn’t say anything about on this particular matter.

Was it a broader issue of science vs church in general and solar system just happened to be the hot contemporary topic?

I found a Civil War veteran in an 1886 Grand Army of the Republic whose unit is listed as the “US Submarine Corps.” Did the US military (like the Confederacy) have submarines during the Civil War, too?

[US] Why are short-barrel shotguns illegal, but pistols that chamber shotgun shells legal?

I recently came across [this meme] (https://me.me/i/why-does-anyone-need-a-pistol-that-fires-shotgun-shells-21027523) and it made me wonder.

I know a SCOTUS ruling in the 1920s declared that certain firearms, like short-barrel shotguns & rifles and fully-automatic firearms could be banned without infringing on the overall right to keep & bear arms. I know the .410 shell was developed before most firearms regulations were a thing, so it could be considered as being grandfathered in, but then you also have things like AR-15 pistols that came about much later and it seems to me that things like pistols designed to chamber rifle shells and pistols designed to chamber shotgun shells (I know it will also chamber .45LC shells, but the .410 shells are longer and won't chamber in a "normal" .45LC revolver) ought to be illegal under those types of laws & court rulings.

So that all leads up to my questions: what laws and historical court rulings allow the manufacture & sale of such weapons? Have there been any serious attempts at regulating either the weapons themselves or the ammunition they fire? I know there was a push a few years ago to regulate steel-tipped (armor-piercing) 5.56 ammo, but A) it falls under the 20-year rule and B) the proposal was ultimately withdrawn.

I am a German soldier/citizen in 1940. What do I hear on the German radio? Do foreign songs appear or do I only hear "Axis music"?

By axis music I mean German music and music of counties directly allied to Germany. I'd like to exclude the obvious "non je regrette rien" from Edith Piaf.

Is there anything particular about Lincoln that made even his supporters hostile to him?

How did the military lands of the themes function in the Byzantine Empire?

My understanding was that the lands were given out as military estates, in military districts where possible, to the field armies most likely during Constans II's reign. The deal is that the soldiers receive land in order for the military service of them and their descendants. Over time, the laws are changed so that tax obligations are taken up by their neighbours when they're campaigning and that the military obligation is tied to the land and not the families.

Specifically, there are a few peculiar bits. For instance, on page 200 of Sowing the Dragon's Teeth by Eric McGeer, "he [Nikephoros II Phokas] also raised the minimum inalienable value of the military properties [of cavalrymen] from four to twelve pounds of gold."

Did the state give out more lands here or did they add a given family's private lands into their military lands thus increasing the value?

Reading request: Suez Crisis, Aden and the Troubles (early 70's particularly)

Hi, I'm looking for a recommendation for books about these three episodes in British military history.

I have a personal connection to all three, and I've decided it's long past time that I educated myself on them beyond my current superficial understanding.

They don't have to be military focused, in fact I would prefer them to include wider context.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Were there any truly talented Nazi artists, musicians, or writers who would be renowned if not for their political views?

Were there any talented Nazi filmmakers, writers, or musicians who are overlooked for being on the wrong side of history.

I thought about this while watching RACE on Netflix and it also made me think of the Nazi filmmaker in Inglorious Bastards.

How did Mongols held their line with only cavalry?

It seems since they used all cavalry armies they would be very mobile but lack standing power. Cavalry is bad at defense. How did the Mongols held dedicated enemy attacks at bay? Feigning for long periods may cause the enemy to attack your camp (as happened in manzikert) and cause loss of precious resources for the campaign.

Is there a lucid explanation of why Christianity survived and ultimately triumphed over Paganism when the Vikings invaded England?

I'm curious as to what exactly is thought by historians to have caused Christianity to survive the onslaught of the Viking invasion? one would imagine that paganism would have triumphed or at least survived alongside Christianity but it seems to have been snuffed out rather quickkly as Vikings adopted Christianity.

Is there a good explanation of how this came about? major events or pivotal decisions that caused it?

Thank you in advance
