Short Answers to Simple Questions | March 21, 2018

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

When Japanese military leaders forced Emperor Hirohito to go to war against the USA, his only protest was to read them a poem of peace by his grandfather - what poem was this?

I can't seem to find it online - this is taken from Beevor's excellent The Second World War book

How widespread was feudalism in Europe during the high Middle Ages?

So the High Middle Ages is known for being a period in which feudalism flourished in Europe. But was this the same, or at least similar, in all of Europe? Say, for example, were Venice or Novgorod as "feudal" as France or the Holy Roman Empire? What about the Papal States? Was there any country that didn't apply any degree of feudalism at all? And what kingdom or empire would you say was the biggest exponent of this economic system?

What was foreign language education like for American students before the 20th century?

It is commonly known that a number of prominent early Americans were able to speak and write in a language apart from English, such as French. I'm curious to know what the available methods of foreign language learning were, particularly in cases like Benjamin Franklin's who was self taught. How did these methods change through the 18th and 19th centuries? How did we arrive at the sorts of standardized foreign language courses that are taught in modern high schools?

Why is The US and its Allies seen often as being Militarily Defeated in the Vietnam War?

I often hear people and see on reddit ect, say that the US and its Allies were defeated by farmers and lost the war. Though in reality surely it was due to media coverage and the anti war movement despite the communists being defeated and suffering horrific loses in most battles that took place. If thats the case why is so much of the current stigma about the US being defeated in combat.

2nd try: The Roman Senate was still convening and electing 'consuls' 50 years after the "fall" of Rome, as early 6th century philosopher Boethius, as well as his sons, served as 'consuls of Rome'. At what time did they drop the pretense of being a government? Did something specific trigger it?

Why did the Wahhabis during their conquest of Arabia allow the Shia to remain in Saudi Arabia?

When the Ikwan and Saudis were conquering Arabia, why didn't they either force the Shia to convert, kill them, or drive them out of the kingdom? They were known to slaughter in great numbers, and seemed to have no problem forcing the other Sunnis to convert, so why didn't they force the Shia to do the same thing? I know that in Saudi Arabia they do not allow other religions or sects practiced openly, to include Sufism or other branches of Sunni Islam, so why allow the Shia, even while being heavily persecuted?

Why was the Battle of Leipzig so devastating and why did Napoleon lose the battle?

I’ve read that despite the fame of the Battle of Waterloo as the official death knell of Bonapartist France, that by comparison it was not nearly as devastating as the Battle of Leipzig both in terms of casualties and long term effects. Is there any merit to these claims, and if there was, how exactly did Napoleon even find himself in such a catastrophic situation in the first place?

How did John Major negotiate and Opt-out of the social chapter of the Maastricht Treaty?

I've asked this before but never had an answer.

I understand why it was sought after but I can't seem to find much information around what the UK had to do to get it.

From what I have read it seems clear that Germany made a concession for the UK, but in return for what? I did find something that suggested the UK was required to recognise newly formed Croatian and Slovenian states, but I can't seem to find anything substantial that backs this up.

In Winter of 1914, there was a Christmas truce on the western front, and we know the higher-ups disapproved, but is there any reactions from the civilians at home? Did they approve, or was this seen as showing weakness to an enemy they've been told to hate (or something along those lines)?
