Thoughts on Bertrand Russell's Philosophical World View?

Currently reading History of Western Philosophy which I'm finding incredibly enlightening. His criticisms of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, who have for better or for worse influenced my world view, have been very helpful. But I want to know more about Russell's greater impact, and how his style of study and criticism holds up in modern times. Thanks.

What are some of the best ways to research history?

I often find myself having issues while researching different parts of history. I’ll either be researching something about the two world wars and not find enough information on a specific topic, or I will be researching something like a Vikings or ancient Greeks and never be able to find anything about a specific scenario just for example. So could somebody tell me a good way or perhaps a good website to go to to make this a better experience for me?

Enlightenment literary history: is there any chance that Goethe's poem "Der Erlkonig" might have been inspired/derived from the British ballad "Lord Randall"?

I was just reading Goethe and I was struck by how thematically, rhythmically, and structurally similar the two poems were. Both have similar meters as ballads, and a similar call and response structure about a child dying from a fantastic cause as they are questioned by their parent.

Goethe was an extraordinarily well-read polyglot and scholar. The oldest known published version of 'Lord Randall' is from 1629. Is there any evidence that Goethe might have been inspired by this earlier ballad?

D-Day: Lack of Allied shelling?

I watched saving Private Ryan recently, and something that struck me as absurd (being a veteran myself) was the obvious presence of major defensive capability by the German army. Why didn’t the American and British navies shell the absolute bejesus out of the landing sites before deploying ground forces?

What are the criteria for determining when a language is different enough from its historical self to be considered a distinct language?

I was looking at this Indo-European language tree and it made me wonder, how do historians differentiate between languages on the axis of time? For example, where does Classical Greek end and Koine Greek begin? Are the same criteria applied to all languages, or can they differ from one language to another (e.g., a cataclysmic event being the turning point in one case but a gradual shift being examined in another)? How is the time that a language "dies" determined (besides the obvious, like for languages spoken by small communities where the last living speaker dies)?

When, how and why did the borders between the Brazilian provinces of Grão-Pará and Mato Grosso change?

I hope this question isn't too specific. I was looking at some Brazilian maps in Wikipedia and I noticed that sometime between 1822 and 1889, the border between the Mato Grosso and Grão-Pará (later just Pará) provinces changed from a very squiggly line into a completely straight one. I tried doing some searching on the matter but couldn't find anything, so I decided to ask about it here.

When exactly did the change occur? Did they do it via some treaty? If so, what treaty was it? And lastly, what was the reason behind the change? Were the older borders causing conflict or something in the region?

Were the Rosenburgs actually guilty of espionage?

When reading various history overviews of the Cold War, I often stumble upon snippets of the execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenburg. They were executed in a time of high paranoia in the USA, and the books somewhat leave the impression that their conviction and execution might have more a product of the hysteria as opposed to them being actual Soviet spies and seems to imply that their execution was a miscarriage of justice. So, how guilty were the Rosenburgs? Was their trial more of kangaroo court or was their conviction legally sound?

I suppose my question comes in two parts.

  1. What is the historical consensus of the investigation/trial as it took place. By the standards of the time period, where they found guilty in proper court of law with proper evidence to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt? Did the state respect their legal rights as per the law in the 1950s.

  2. In the seventy or so years since their trial, how much more do we know to support or refute what those in the 1950s knew.

why is Donald Duck way more popular than Mickey Mouse in Northern Europe and Mickey Mouse in the US?

When I used to read strips when I was younger I always used to skip Mickey Mouse stories because I found them boring. I heard this from more people around me So I think it is a popular opinion in the Netherlands. Generaly the strip is called Donald Duck and 80% of the stories is about the Donald Duck universe. So to conclude why does this difference exist?

Why are the victims of the RMS Titanic so often referred to as "lost souls"?

I've been sick for the past two or three days, and I've found myself watching videos and films about the sinking of the Titanic, and its film adaptations. In one such video, a clip from a podcast (language warning), one of the hosts mocks those who continue to show reverence for the event, imitating people who call the victims of the sinking "poor, lost souls". This got me thinking. Now, my question is not about whether the sinking should still be spoken of with reverence over a century later—my question is, how and why did the victims of the sinking come to be so often referred to as "lost souls"?

I was readily able to find a number of examples online, using Google Search and Google Books, in which the casualties of the Titanic are called "lost souls":

And in my search, I found a very early example from a publication dated just less than a year after the disaster, Herald and Presbyter (January 22, 1913), p. 6.:

The cry of the lost souls who went down with the steamship Titanic startled the world.

I'm wondering if there is perhaps some religious, cultural, or maritime context that I'm missing. Perhaps it simply has to do with the fact that many of the victims' bodies met an unceremonious end, rather than receiving a more traditional, "proper" burial?

An additional note: some time ago, I watched a 1985 Japanese animated film called Night on the Galactic Railroad. In the film, two cats go on a journey aboard a train across the Milky Way galaxy. During the journey, they are briefly joined a tutor and two children who were aboard the Titanic. The train makes a stop at the Christian Heaven, and the tutor and children depart. This would seem to me to give further credence to the possibility that the "lost souls" moniker is connected to an idea of the victims' souls not being properly laid to rest. Any thoughts?

In the Northman, Alexander Skarsgard plays Amleth the Bear Wolf, a renowned Viking Berserker. How much do we know about the Berserkers? And how would they be used by Norse Armies?

Hi everyone, suffice to say I’m very interested in the Northman and it’s depiction of Viking berserkers. I have a few questions on the subject:

  1. How would one go about becoming a Berserker or joining a troop of Berserkers?
  2. What would induce or cause someone to go Berserkergang? Was it PTSD, mushrooms, henbane, or all of the above?
  3. Did berserkers perform rituals for their transformations? Also what separates a Bear berserker from a wolf berserker?
  4. How were berserkers fielded by Norse Viking commanders? What sort of role would they play in a shield wall or on a raid?
  5. What did their equipment and gear mostly look like? We’re they usually just clad in furs like Alexander is in the Northman?
  6. How were the berserkers perceived by Norse society at large? Were they loathed or admired? Or a bit of both?
  7. Lastly, when did the practice officially start, and when did it end? And why did it end?

Thank you so much, open to book suggestions as well

How did American naval aviation reconnaissance work during the early half of the pacific war?

I have been reading up on the early battles of the Pacific War, and the role reconnaissance plays in finding and identifying enemy fleets. What was the standard American naval reconnaissance doctrine in 1942? How were aerial patrols conducted to find an enemy fleet? Was each patrol plane sent to scout a certain region of the ocean for X miles? Were long-range patrol aircraft like the PBY and B-17s effective?

Did naval aviation officers take what they learned at The Battle of the Coral Sea and Midway and implement it in future battles?

What would a British "victory" in the American Revolutionary War have looked like?

As I've learned about the political history of the American Revolutionary War, I've been wondering what a possible ending to the war might have looked like if the British had "won." Obviously they successfully conquered Philadelphia and that was insufficient to end the war. Were there back-channel negotiations between the parties about what a negotiated peace would look like? Was the goal of hardline anti-revolutionary British leaders complete status quo antebellum? Would the revolutionaries ever have accepted return to British domination under changed political terms?

Thanks!
