Rome could swap dynasties without losing the state. China couldn't. Why not?

OK, I'm only up through Tang in the History of China podcast by /u/cthulhushrugged, so maybe a later dynasty pulled it off, but I think not.

In Rome, you had the Judio-Claudian dynasty, then the Flavians, later Severans, Constantinians, et cetera. A new head of a dynasty, or even just a singleton (crisis of the Third Century), could seize the existing capital and government, and it was "say hello to the new boss, same as the old boss".

In China, though, I don't think that ever happened. Even when there was a short interregnum, like Sui to Tang, there still was an interregnum, new capital, and I think a new governmental setup, though probably resembling the old. (Exceptions that I know of: Empress Wu and Wang Mang -- but these were singleton usurpers and the old dynasty more or less picked up after they died.)

Was there a dynastic transition in China keeping the same capital and system? Am I overlooking other continuity in China?

How do you find where original manuscripts in archives or libraries might be?

I'm very interested in pursuing a personal research project concerning French troops in America during the American Revolution. I've been attempting to locate where original manuscripts by some of these soldiers might be, but I don't really know how. I've run into this problem of finding primary source documents many times throughout my research. Are there any specific websites, certain archives, or general pieces of advice that can help me? Thank you very much in advance!

Information Request: The Russian Crime Underworld from 1900 to 2000 (1998 Works Too) (More Specific in Post)

Hello. I'm in the process of researching Russia's criminal underworld from 1900 to 2000 for a paper (worth around 40% of my semester grade). While I have found some sources, I'm severely lacking sources for different periods and could use some help.

Specifically, I request information about these topics in these time frames:

  • 1900 through the End of Communist Russia (Anything within the original timeframe)
  • Held Political Power (Specifically in Communist and Soviet Russia)
  • Criminal Culture (Specifically in Communist and Soviet Russia)
  • 1900-2000 (1900-1998 Works Too) (Anything within the original timeframe)
  • How Russia's Government Has Tried to Stop Crime (Anything within the original timeframe)

Any source is fine; however, digital text (Websites, E-Books, ect.) is preferred. Thank you in advance.

What accounts do we have over how Christopher Columbus slaughtered Native Americans?

I was always quite hasey on this. I was told many Naitive Americans died off once Europeans made contact with them, due to disease. I do tend to hear a lot of people mentioning that Christopher Columbus was genocidal, but I never actually learned about any accounts of him killing Natives. Did he do these things unprovoked? Was most of these death unwarranted? What mistreatments did Christopher Columbus do to the Natives?

"Hail, Columbia" used to be the de-facto national anthem for the United States, but today almost no American has heard of this song. What led to its downfall?

What really strikes me is that many other patriotic songs still remain the popular imagination, such as "America the Beautiful" or "Stars and Stripes Forever." Why not "Hail, Columbia"?

Why didn't hitler bombed the 300,000 troops of English and French soldiers on dunkirk? Wouldn't it have been easier to just bomb them using planes?

I know there were planes used by Germans to trap them troops at the beaches. But assuming they've all gathered at one place in massive numbers, if one bomb dropped onto the most vital part, they could've been all killed very easily! Instead he let most of them escape.

Is this a fixed formula in early 18th century English letters which is making these letters look the same or am I looking at copies of the exact same letter?

Hey everyone, so for my totally unrelated internship I was asked to decipher a couple of dispatches that were sent by Lieutenant Governor William Gooch to London. The reason I am looking for this is because we are looking for a letter in which Gooch named Orange County (Virginia) after William IV, Prince of Orange

I am wondering this because I can't decipher the entire letter, but I do notice that there seem to be a lot of similarities in the capitalized/larger words such as: George, fifteen shillings, We have, Beginning, With all, To have hold, To be held, Yielding, Paying, Provided.

Any help is appreciated, especially about deciphering the letters, but anything about those two people or Orange County is appreciated as well.

These are the letters: https://imgur.com/a/bOhQy

The Safavid Empire was, for a time, one of the most important empires in the Muslim world, along with its neighbors, the Mughals and the Ottomans. Yet it fell quite easily to a small group of Afghan tribesmen. How come?

Are there any diaries or records directly from people who today would be considered to have PTSD?

I am interested in any and all accounts. I would particularly like to hear the experiences of a line soldier from the 1700s-mid 1800s. i felt like seeing people get shredded next to you and being expected to stand still would rattle people to the core. That being said, I would not be surprised if there are accounts from the beginning of written history.

How accurate are battles portrayed within movies and TV shows set in the Middle Ages?

Just as the title suggests, I was curious about how accurate most war movies depicted actual battles during medieval times. Did both sides just meet in the middle and swing their swords and shields around until the last man standing?

Examples include Game of Thrones and Braveheart for context.

Doing a project over the Treaty of Portsmouth. Could you a little advice from you historians/ history majors

Would anyone be able to link some primary documents they would recommend? And I'm having some trouble both online and in libraries trying to find who all was at the treaty signing; where would I look to find all the diplomats and government officials involved? I cannot read Russian or Japanese unfortunately, but the paper is mostly centered around certain American aspects of the event.

If anyone could help (or if there is a subreddit more suited to these recommendations) I would greatly appreciate it! My project spanning the entirety of this semester is a make-or-break for history majors and I will take any help through additional sources I can get.
