Is there any books discussing how the First World War was financed? How were funds spent throughout the war? How were they raised? How far reaching was spending all of that money?

I'm always a bit suspicious about claims which seem to be superimposing a modern idea on the past, and I can't really find any decent source beyond Wikipedia's journalistic source (and I have no idea if that is valid because I cannot read Spanish, sadly), so I was wondering if this was a real event and if it actually was what we'd understand today as "marriage" or something else.

Hi!
I am trying to understand why Chinese folk, pagan, African diasporic, and other traditional religions don't and didn't really proselytize.
Did they not care about the afterlife of other peoples?
Or is general morality more important to them in securing a good afterlife?
Of course, modern salvation groups such as Yiguando do proselytize, but I'm just curious as to why there was so much tolerance.
For example, according to Pascal's Wager, if I were to encounter a Norse, Greek, chinese folk, or other deity, would they be upset that I didn't convert? Just to put the question into scope.
It seems such tolerance didn't extend to Christianity in some cultures, mainly because their monotheism was percieved as being a denial of the gods themselves and was deemed blasphemous and dangerous (at least in Rome).
I'm aware of some theories:
A) Spirituality is local and focused on the immediate community.
B) Many were pantheistic.
Thanks!

As I understand it, the Vikings that raided the British Isles were mostly from modern Norway/Denmark, the same general area as the Anglo-Saxons originated from. What changes occured over the 2-3 centuries between invasion waves, that meant the Vikings could raid almost with impunity?

With the growth of MMA the truely effective set of martial arts were slowly made apparent. Disciplines like muay thai, boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu were proven to be more effective than other traditional styles like kung fu, aikido etc.
What I'm wondering is, as a stand-alone discipline traditional muay thai is leaps and bounds more effective than most other styles. I'm wondering if there's a reason why this developed out of thailand. It can't be just because of a rich martial history: most countries have that.
Thanks for any insight!

Particularly, with regards to this passage from Wikipedia about the sinking of the Yamato,
"The bombs did extensive damage to the topside of the ship, including knocking out power to the gun directors and forcing the anti-aircraft guns to be individually and manually aimed and fired, greatly reducing their effectiveness"
Were there computers involved here or am I misreading this? And if I am not, how was this level of automation possible in 1945?

According to Peter Jones’ introduction to the Penguin 2003 translation of The Iliad, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, knowledge of Homer lapsed until around 1354, when we can reliably date Petrarch receiving Greek copies of The Iliad and The Odyssey from a Byzantine scholar who had fled west to escape the Ottoman conquests. And yet all this time the West had known of Homer because Roman authors mentioned him constantly. How then did Homer stop being copied or translated into Latin to the point that he was lost to Western Europe for centuries if Roman authors had considered him so noteworthy?

I realize that everything I know about the Mahdis comes from Lytton Strachey’s haigiography of Gordon and passing references by apoplectic Victorians. What was the Mahdist war all about and what was it like in Sudan at the time?

Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

My Grandmother was taken to Rocky Ford Colorado in about 1908 for her health, she had TB. She died soon after and was taken back to her home in Illinois and is buried there. I cannot find a record of a death certificate for her in Colorado. I have contacted the State, County and City with no success. I recently contacted the local library and they are going to check the local newspaper. Any suggestions where I might find a death certificate for her?

In case you don't know, Poland recently made news here in the EU when it asked Germany to pay reparations for invading Poland during the Second World War. My question is, didn't Russia invade Poland too during WW2?
I am mostly concerned about whether Russian invasion & occupation was substantially different from German in regards to the loss of life/destruction of the economy?
P.S. I know about the Holocaust ofcourse, but I believe that's not the reason their are asking Germany to pay reparations for what Germany did to the jewish people, especially since Germany paid reparations to Israel, and Poland itself was pretty antiscemitic at the time.

Inherited these three medals from my recently passed Grandfather. He was English (like me) but didn't fight in WW2 as he was too young at the time. He did join the army as a Tankie in 1949 (we think?). Noone I have asked seems to have any clue where these have come from and would have to assume these came from Army Swaps (he was posted in Germany numerous times).
Anyone who could shed any information on these medals would be greatly appreciated!
