Why is the white flag a symbol of surrender? Is this confined to the west or is it universal? Do armies carry around white flags just in case or do they just use whatever?

I think my grandfather was in the 101st airborne..? HELP

Growing up my father always told me stories that my grandfather told him, about Normandy and the battle of the bulge, liberating camps. Don’t laugh, I know it’s just a game, but the story of the 101st airborne division that is portrayed in the latest Call of Duty game is identical to what I heard about my grandfather. Which got me to thinking if my grandfather was a part of the 101st, I️t seems like kind of a big deal.

Anyways, does anyone know how I can find out what division my grandfather was in? I’ve found his draft papers on ancestry but that’s about as far as I ever got. My grandfather died when I was very young and my father died a few years ago.

Any help appreciated!

Were there really a lot of murders (and crime) during Old West (or the Wild West)?

Every western genre films I see seem to depict mass murders of some sort. (e.g. the ENTIRE town's population killed, etc.) How true is the popular culture's portrayal of "wildness" of Wild West? Was the crime rate in the Wild West really exceptionally high? Was the nature of crime really much more gruesome? (like the entire population of a town getting killed, etc.)

In the Golden Age of Piracy, did pirates use a variety British, Spanish, and French currency, or did they just stick to British pounds since the overwhelming majority of pirates at the time were of Anglophone origin?

specifically sticking to the 1710's, as the value of a country's currency changes a lot.

Why do so many historic pieces of music not have creative titles?

I would think with all the work they put into writing pieces, they'd give them more of a title than just "Bhrams concerto number three" or "Beethoven's fifth symphony", but I guess not. When and why was this a thing, and when did it stop?

What's the difference in design philosophy between Soviet and American submarines?

Both have very distinctive visual appearances with a strong degree of design continuity--I feel as a general rule you could show a picture of any Soviet submarine or any US sub w/o markings and be able to tell whose ship it was. What differences cause this?

Did Christian Rome forbade pagan practices?

To clarify, I've been reading how when Rome accepted Christianity, they were many laws limiting pagans and there practices. Like how the only writings to be permitted were those supported by the line currently regarded as orthodox, pagans were discouraged from writing anything, or rulers sacking and destroying pagans temples. I just wanted to know if this was true, done for religious reasons, and were these really enforced or just lip service for emperors?

Why did the Federal Reserve Bank of the U.S. begin massively increasing the rate of inflation of the dollar around 1970?

This chart from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, shows the supply of U.S. currency over time.

From the beginning of the chart (1918) through about 1968, the rate of inflation Y/Y is low. Following 1972ish, the rate of inflation goes up very rapidly Y/Y and the money supply skyrockets. Even ignoring the post 1997 portions of this chart, which are outside the scope of this subreddit, the Fed seems to have had a policy of massively increasing inflation and the rate thereof through the 30-year period between 1968 and 1998. Why? Or am I misreading this?

What did all the gangsters do when prohibition ended in 1933? How did they earn their money afterwards? How many switched to respectable jobs? Was there an increase in different criminal activities?

Why I am asking this question: In a discussion whether de-criminalizing drugs will dry off the income basis of criminals and therefore massively reducing crime, somebody made the point that most of the countless criminals involved will simply switch to different criminal endeavours (like buglary, robbery, or kidnapping for ransom); he claimed that nearly no of the drug dealers and middlemen will say "oh, this isn't profitable anymore, lets learn programming and join an IT startup"

I am not sure what to make of this point, so to know what happened in the aftermath of the prohibition might give valuable insights. Of course people like Al Capone had 'free lodging' for the rest of their lives, but there must have been tens of thousands of people involved who needed an income afterwards. As they were humans, they surely tried to keep and increase the level of lifestyle and income they were used to. Did they compensate by switching the type of criminal business?

With searching askhistorians I only found a similiar question from a year ago which didn't receive any replies.

Saturday Reading and Research | December 02, 2017

Today:

Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.

So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

Simo Hayha is widely known as the best sniper who ever lived, and with good reason. He is credited with over 500 confirmed kills. However recent evidence seems to suggest that this number is greatly exaggerated. Do we have a reliable estimate of the number of kills Simo Hayha actually had?
