Were the Scottish and English colonies in North America still separate after the Act of Union? Or was it just one big British possession officiously administrated by England?

Why isn't the UK considered a Nordic country?

If the Anglo-Saxons were from Denmark, followed by the Vikings and the Danelaw, followed by the Normans... How is at least the "England" part of the UK not considered a Nordic country?

I halfway know my answer, in that they are culturally different. But why is the English culture different vs. how Iceland has remained a Nordic Country?

My question may be sophomoric, but I'm hoping to prompt some great AskHistorian to explanation!

Thanks!

In my US Legal History class, our professor made a claim that there was an "anti-spice" movement related to the temperance movement, that decreed that spices in certain cuisines (such as from Italians) caused excessive sexual urges. Are there any documents of such a movement?

Sylvester Graham, creator of the Graham Cracker, was cited as a member of such a movement or idea, but he's the only person I can actually find that relates to this.

How did pre-modern countries dependent on fishing for food survive naval warfare/blockades?

Historical descriptions of Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean naval wars mention that merchant vessels of hostile nations would be routinely seized, sometimes openly and sometimes through privateers. Britain in particular achieved something like naval supremacy during the Napoleonic Era, able to intercept most Continental shipping of enemy states.

But what happened to fishing boats? Would they be captured as well? Would it be worth it to haul the boats back home to one's own fishermen? Or would they hide while enemy fleets were around? Would this cause a massive disruption to the food supply of certain countries?

Did there use to be orange (Protestant) and green (Catholic) sidewalks in parts of North Ireland?

I had a history professor tell me a while ago that before/during the era of the IRA, tensions were so high in parts of North Ireland that split towns would have one sidewalk (or part of the sidewalk) painted green and the other painted orange, marking it as "safe" walking territory for your religious group. Can anyone back this up, or find an article/source about it? I may just be searching wrong, but I can't seem to find anything on it.

In Assassins Creed Origins Julius Caesar is portrayed as arrogant, aloof, powerhungry and misogynistic but devoted to "eternal Rome". Is this an accurate portrayal of his character?

For reference, he compares poets to roaches "an annoyance but easily dealt with", is pretty much a douche to the Egyptian protagonist and gets angry at the (male) protagonist for letting the (female) protagonist go on an important mission because he thinks a woman would screw it up. In his death scene he also says to the half-Greek half-Egyptian protagonist that Rome will never fall to "one of your kind" in what's definitely a "you people" kinda way which surprised because I thought he was pretty open to foreigners by Roman standards.

Also has a raging hardon for Alexander btw because he conquered the world, that much I know is accurate. This is what he looks like.

How "socialist" really was the Nazi Party (National Socialist German Workers Party)?

I've now seen several times in online political debates that when someone on the (usually far) right is called a Nazi or compared to Hitler, their response is that "Well, Hitler was a socialist." Considering the name of the party, how truly "socialist" would the Nazi regime's policies be considered on a modern scale?

[WW2] Were soldiers really assigned canned goods without can openers? If so how were soldiers supposed to open it, or was this simply an oversight?

I heard that they supplied troops with canned food during ww2 but didn't assign can openers or anything of the sort. Is there any truth to this? If so why, and if not, is there any where this idea could have originated from?

In WWII, what was the difference between joining the United States Navy vs the United States Naval Reserve?

I've been reading a lot of Medal of Honor and other WWII citations and noticed a high percentage of officers were naval reservists rather than full fledged navy officers. I'm aware that many older, retired officers were reactivated, especially to run auxiliary and transport ships, but I also see quite a few 20-25 year olds, often joining right out of college part way through the war, commanding small patrol ships and whatnot almost always listed as being from the USNR.

As a sailor, what were naval battles like in WW2 Any interesting factoids to share?

Question is directed towards any knowledge on the larger battleships of ww2. Does anyone know of any personal accounts or descriptions of what it was like? Im interested mainly how rudimentary the navies of the time were compared to now, because even at the time they were manning huge metal warships.

Why did every Arab League nation vote AGAINST resolution 194 that expressed support for the Palestinian refugees' Right of Return?

Section 11 of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194 supports the Right of Return for Palestinian refugees. It seems that the Arab nations should support this (since it would get the many Palestinian refugees in their countries to go back). Yet, the six Arab League nations (Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen) voted against the resolution. Why? Is it because of some other part of the resolution that they disagreed with? Does it have to do with the the Eastern bloc countries, that also voted against this resolution (whereas Western bloc countries voted for it)?

EDIT: It's the United Nations General Assembly. Thank you /u/ghostofherzl

I'm a 20-year-old college student majoring in history, and I've realized that I have only superficial knowledge about late 20th century America. The history courses I took growing up never got beyond WWII or the Civil Rights movement. What are some good books to learn more about the last few decades of American history?
