Currently (and anecdotaly) I've noticed a slump in general mood of my city. This, the epidemic of diagnosed mental health issues and the political climate has made me wonder what the turning point of a global financial crisis is into a depression?

I'm currently reading through The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, and when I read about the Reichstag Fire event that essentially allowed Hitler the opportunity to seize totalitarian power, my gut reaction was that the fire wasn't actually set by the accused Communist, but someone connected to the NSDAP like the S.A., for instance. Surprisingly, through the limited research I've done since, it's general consensus that said fire was indeed blamed on the Communist. Has there been anything historically reported that would suggest that this was instead a Nazi false flag event?
Thanks in advance for the replies.

Do you guys think that it was Serbia because they did not try that hard to stop the Black Hand, or do you think that it was Austria-Hungary that started it because it reacted so harshly when Franz Ferdinand was shot?

A novice reader/listener of documentaries, it seems that had Yamamoto instead focused all available ships/planes/equipment on Midway, the chances of victory would have been magnified. In part, the defeat was due to spreading our resources far too much, and leaving the carriers to fend for themselves. Why did the IJN have such complex strategies?

Hello everyone! I'm trying to research the relationship between the decline of the Ottoman empire and the turmoil in Europe between 1815-1914.
Any recommendations on books/textbooks/research papers/etc. about either the decline of the Empire or its foreign relations during that time period? I realize this is a broad topic, I just need to be pointed in the right direction. Thank you!

thank you for your assistance. i couldn't be more lost. :/
edit: To clarify, I'm reading other historians' historical contextualizations and textual interpretations. Not creating my own. I'm supposed to analyze their histories.

I mean, in the dark ages, you only hear of people burning witches and not wizards. Why was it widely believed back then that women could be magical but not really men as well?

Picture taken at the Newseum. It's the cover page of the 1733 edition of Poor Richard's Almanack. The text includes
And makes since the Creation
followed by several year counts according to the "Eastern Greeks", the Romans (?), the Jews, but also
By the Matin Church when O. ent. V. 6932
By the computation of W. W. 5742
Can anyone elucidate these last two? There was a famous calculation by an Archbishop of Armagh, but he was James Ussher and his calculation was 4004 B.C., which would have been 5738, maybe plus or minus a year (since his Creation was in September).
Or the Roman notion: did that mean some Catholic reckoning?

Other "emperor" titles such as Kaiser and Czar are derived from Caesar. How did the leader of the direct remnant of the Roman Empire become to be know as Basileus?

Hi and thanks in advance,
Today id like to ask about Prussia and why it's known as a "military with a country", whether or not that is accurate, and what lessons might we take from a country with that kind of framework and what pillars would we use to identify a similarly structured country?

Holstein Friesians are a breed of dairy cattle originating from the Dutch provinces of North Holland and Friesland, and Schleswig-Holstein in Northern Germany and Jutland. does that mean that ancient egyptians had trade relations with north europe?

Brighton Hotel Bombings, Warrington, Manchester, Docklands, The Mortar to 10 Downing Street. There were a series of high profile, successful attacks conducted by the IRA in the 80's and 90's on the British Mainland. How did a Terrorist organisation reach the level where they could frequently conduct huge attacks on the mainland of an isolated first world power with some of the most sophisticated policing in the world, especially after the Troubles had been reigning for over 20 years?
The only thing I think draws comparison to it is the Basque ETA, and they're just as fascinating, and almost all of the same questions apply, where a fraction of the population in both nations actively supported the Freedom Fighters.
EDIT: Yes I realised I spelt "devastating" wrong in the title.

I've heard that clerical celibacy wasn't taken seriously in medieval Europe and it was common for priests and bishops and whatnot to openly keep concubines, even the pope. Is this true and when did that change?

I've heard that it wasn't a valid option for Britain to confront Germany about their violations of the treaty of Versailles because it would have been an unpopular choice among the British public; they were already exhausted from the previous war and didn't want another one. However, I've heard that many people would have been against the idea of attacking Germany due to Hitler's popularity. Does anybody have any examples of this?
