Before firearm production was industrialized, how were weapons such as muskets, early rifles, and pistols made?

Before gun manufacturing became mechanized, it appears that specific families ran large workshops for producing gunpowder weapons. How would these weapons be made and repaired without interchangeable parts, especially in the early to mid 1700s?

Today:

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Were there mosques and synagogues in Byzantine Constantinople?

The common image of Constantinople seems to be of a cosmopolitan trade hub with people from all across the Mediterranean so naturally one assumes there must have been people various faiths living within it's walls.

Congratulations to the 'Best of July' Award Winners

The votes are in!

This month, /u/cleopatra_philopater regains the podium, taking the 'User's Choice Award' for their work on the question "Cleopatra is pretty (in)famous for her sexual exploits at this point. Is this based in ancient accounts or is it a modern invention?"

Meanwhile the newcomer /u/bentresh caps off their first month as a flair by taking the "Flair's Choice Award" for the answer to "How did the standards and ethics of excavation during the earlier days of Egyptology affect the preservation of information, and our understanding of Ancient Egypt?"

And finally, out of a field of several worthy candidates, the Dark Horse Award, for the highest voted contribution from a non-flair, goes by a nose to /u/bees_in_my_face who responded to "Bigfoot, Twin Peaks, and sparkling vampires- where does the trope of supernatural or "weird" occurrences in the Pacific Northwest originate?"

So as always, a big congratulations to the winners, and a big thanks to everyone who contributed to the subreddit in the past month! Also a reminder, if you want to nominate answers for the monthly awards, the best way to do so is to submit your favorite posts every week to the Sunday Digest!

Did arms manufacturers in the 19th and early 20th centuries actually conspire to start wars, as popularly depicted?

This trope can be found everywhere, from Basil Bazarov in Tintin and the Broken Ear to Professor Moriarty in the most recent Sherlock Holmes film - whether a conflict between two third-world despots or a world war, unscrupulous arms manufacturers can be found pulling the strings to ensure that they turn a tidy profit- sometimes even selling to both sides. Did this ever happen in actuality, during the period described?

I am a powerful Viking Lord, yet I abandon my very core of belief due to some missionary from far away. Why?

What were the key reasons that made Nordic Lord's like Harald Bluetooth to give up their faith for Christianity? Even more so local Lords, what was so appealing with Christianity?

What tactics and arguments did the church and the missionaries use? Even if a long process, why would individuals in the Nordic countries abandon Norse faith?

How many koku would a ninja in medieval Japan get paid for a typical assassination?

Another question is, were there whole "ninja villages" that could get paid enough that everyone in the village could sit around or train full time based entirely on the income from assassination jobs?

I remember something about an amount mentioned in the book Shogun but I don't remember what it was or if it was realistic.

(No, I don't watch Naruro. I hate that show.)

When two cultures met, how would they go about learning each others languages?

Just as an example, when the Europeans arrived in America. On initial contact, their cultures would be vastly different and their languages would have little to no common roots. But eventually they got around this, and people from both sides could learn the language of the other. How would they go about setting this up? I have often heard that missionaries were charged with learning the languages of other cultures in order to facilitate conversion, was there ever a standardized system for how to learn a completely foreign language?

How did Ethiopia survive/withstand the Arab conquests through North Africa?

I was playing the Total War game set around 400 CE as the Aksumites. I was wondering why they, despite their proximity and close ties with the Arabian peninsula, did not get conquered during the Arab conquest of the surrounding areas. Was there an attempt to invade the region that failed?

Did Poles killed 200 000 Jews during WWII?

Hi,

on NBA subreddit there is discussion about WWII and some persons claim, that Poles killed 200k Jews. As a source they bring Gross' and Grabowski's works, but how reliable their estimations are? For example Grabowski is heavily criticized by over 100 scientists and I've read "Neighbors" and this book is full of exaggeration (for example people playing soccer with Jew head), so I'm not sure how scientific this work is.

Anyway, I would like to know if these 200k estimations are true and if they are, then based on what sources they were calculated. Could someone provide the math step by step, please? Thank you all in advance.

Was it possible for a US Army infantryman to serve on two or three fronts in WW2?

I came across a box full of my grandfather's belongings. He served in the US Army during WW2 and died shortly after my mother was born. He never discussed the war so we know very little. He left behind everything that's pictured here: http://imgur.com/a/F08oZ

If you're able to, I would appreciate some identification of these badges. I just find it odd that he has a Swastika trinket, Chinese currency, and a North African campaign badge.
