Due to my resurgence in interest in Norse mythology due to finding Prof. Jackson Crawford's youtube channel, I've been thinking why Odin is the way he is portrayed. It seems contradictory to worship a god that has so many negative qualities to what was thought to be good. The way he stole the Mead of Poetry seemed to be very Loki-like, and him being a blood brother with Loki are both huge mystery to me. I've thought it might be because one can't project their own understanding of values into people from centuries ago, but I wanted an expert opinion.
Also, he seems to have an intense thirst for knowledge and wisdom, yet did not act much on it. He seems distant from the narrative, except during the creation of the world. Thor is much more active and I think he would have been more likely to be worshiped than Odin.

I just recently became aware of Korea's Admiral Yi and the "Turtle Ship" he and his navy employed. I was wondering if there were any other examples of ships so unique?

Watching 'Band of Brothers' and 'the Pacific' and there's not a pimple in sight, is war good for the skin? It's funny because they go to great lengths to show how sweaty/greasy/dirty they are, but everyone has great skin.

I'm reading about the wars of the roses and popped in my head, how were royal houses formed? Henry IV was a king from the house of Lancaster, his father was from the house of Plantagenet but founded Lancaster? Same with his brother the founder of the house york? Why did the other siblings who also had titles keep the house plantagenet name? And when did Plantagenet (or i guess why since it relates) overtake Angevin as their house name? Or am I thinking of this all wrong........
I guess the same goes for when I'm reading and i see there was a first house of lancaster, and then a second created one???? how...

In gun camera footage of WWII aerial battles, there's a lot of lead flying around. Are there any examples of reported accidental casualties on the ground caused by missed shots?

In this clip from Game of Thrones we see a coin from Braavos that is square shaped. I've never heard of a coin shaped as anything except a circle. Can anyone shed some light on this pressing and important issue?

Did the Japanese population think they were simply hoaxes or did they take them seriously? If so what kind of precautions did the people take and are there any written accounts of the weeks that lead up to the drop, from a Japanese perspective?

I don't know much about the Soviet Union (aside from the memes) but I understand they had repeated crop failures and famines. How did this happen in such a huge, agriculturally-dominated nation?

I'm interested in Old Latin and was trying to find some texts written by writers like Cato, Ennius, Terence, etc. As I was doing this I discovered that there might not be surviving textual examples of Old Latin other than inscriptions. So I got to wondering: where do all these sources about antiquity come from? Are there a significant number of papyri or scrolls from say the republic or does everything we know about them come from medieval codices? How do we actually know about ancient European literature prior to well preserved vellum books? And finally if you have any good resources about Old Latin I'd appreciate it!

I'm hosting a large Roman themed event and one of the elements includes a painting from 1624 that's in the Borghese. I know very little about music history, but the idea of hiring some musicians to recreate a few pieces that would've been played in that estate at that time is very appealing.
Any input is greatly appreciated!
