In America, we eat a large variety of sea animals, but a very limited variety of land animals. How did this come to be?

American seafood includes oysters, clams, crabs, lobster, and numerous species of fish (cod, salmon, mackerel, catfish, halibut, tilapia, bass, swordfish, tuna), etc. Meanwhile, "land meat" seems limited to pigs, cows, sheep, turkey, and chicken. Deer, goat, and rabbit are the more popular "exotic" meats.

Why the diversity in one area and the lack of diversity in another?

How much did luck play a crucial factor for infantry troops in surviving a major battle (e.g. Normandy landings) in WW2? Were there situations so bleak, with a low survival rate no matter what you did?

[I don't mean any disrespect to people who fought and died or survived WW2. All the respect to them in the world]

Watching Hollywood films like Saving Private Ryan you get the sense that it's all pretty random and chaotic. That no matter how skilled or talented of a soldier you are, it's pretty much down to chance (luck, good positioning, right place, right time etc etc.) whether or not you get blown away.

Is that true or am I completely wrong on this?

What would be the best thing to do, and the best place to be as an infantry division in order to survive a major battle in WW2? And likewise vice versa what would be the worst thing to do and the worst place to be in a major battle in WW2?

I once heard that, even at the height of the empire, British mapmakers would draw Britain on the edges of maps, indicating they thought they were as far as one could get from the center of the Christian world, and that this played an outsize role in the British psyche. Is this a credible argument?
