This Episode:
The conversation with /u/CptBuck continues as we move south from Anatolia and the new state of Turkey into the regions of Mesopotamia, Syria, and the Levant. The politics and conflicts which led to the borders and formation of the modern states of Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Israel/Palestine are all discussed, as well as a quick digression into Egypt. We end with a discussion on whether the borders of these nations predestined them for future conflicts. (60mins)

Lets assume it's the 1500's, I have the money and the desire to move from England to France (Im assuming moving countries would be a privilege strictly reserved for the upper/noble class?). How exactly would I have done this? Was it as simple as just packing up and leaving?

Specifically, I refer to the sculptures created in the Renaissance and afterwards (but before industrialization).

Here's the print: http://imgur.com/gallery/7pf4U
It's obvious the page has been ripped out of what I'd guess is an old magazine. The page is the size of an old school Life Magazine but I'm not sure how to confirm that that's where it's from. The back includes part of an article about 1968 Olympians and references 1974 as upcoming, so I'm assuming the 1973 on the dove art is a correct representation of the print year. I've google image searched the entire print, as well as the individual artworks and... nada. Even researching the artist names don't pull up any of these individual pieces. The Japanese artist's name doesn't pull up any results at all! Would love any tips on how to figure out this print's origin.

Maybe this is a totally dumb question. I am visiting Greece and was in the national archeological museum today and saw many references to lions...but from what I know about the lions habitat, even the civilizations they had contact with were hundreds or maybe thousands of miles from the nearest lions.
Even if this was migratory, oral history it seems to me it would have been thousands of years separated! What am I missing?
Edit: just googled it and indeed my ignorant ass misspelled mycenaean.

Also, are they organised on the company level, the regiment level, or something else entirely, and how much does it differ by country and year

I know the myth about Augustus wishing his month to have equal days as Julius, but is that true? What is the real history?

Surely the artist didn't sit there copying their cartoon onto every single copy, but I don't understand how these cartoons could have been reproduced on each copy otherwise.

I have read that at the time of the American Revolution the accents of America and England had not diverged much, but since Alexander Hamilton grew up on the island of Nevis in the caribbean, did he have a different accent that would have made him stand out as an immigrant?

Liberia is one of 2 nations that wasn't colonized by European powers but I haven't read anywhere as to why did the Europeans avoid it. The other nation is Ethiopia and the reason why it wasn't colonized was because they were able to fight back against the European powers and stay independent. Was Liberia's reason similar or did the European's just ignore it?

Hi All, I am looking for a good book(s) on how and why a particular group of people develop a particular culture. I have tried searching the internet as I usually do but terms that I search (developing culture, social development, sociel development theory, etc) all produce so many inaccurate results it becomes impossible. Any suggestions?A particular culture is cool but a more general bok would be awesome! Suggestions? Thanks!

Okay, so I don't graduate until Summer of 2018 or fall of 2017 but I wanted to start thinking about what I am gonna write for my capstone course paper (idk if that is the official name or what). It has to be pretty lengthy, 30 pages or so and I am having trouble finding a good topic with depth. I love American history and would like to do it on that. The presidents fascinate me, the construction of the government, Hamilton vs Jefferson and just the founding of the country. I was wondering if anyone would be able to maybe help me expand on these ideas or help me come up with a topic. It's not due for a while but I'd like to start it and have it done with some time to spare. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Reading about Bactria and Indo-Greek I noticed than there seems to have been some degree of intermarriage between the different political entities at play in the area. But some of them were Hindus, while Greeks had no cast system, so did Hindu power and their societies handles those matches?

Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

Reading this Wikipedia article makes it seem like the Gaelic world, and Ireland in particular, did a lot to spread Christianity to much of Western Europe. My question is why and how. It seems odd to me geographically that a culturally distinct island on the western extremes of Europe would have so much to do with spreading Christianity. Scotland and Ireland are both pretty isolated from the rest of Europe.

Why combine the Czechs and the Slovaks, two different and separate nationalities, like this? I'm curious where the idea and support for shoving two ethnicities into one nation together came from, and why Czechs and Slovaks and not say, Hungarians and Romanians, or Croats and Slovenes, etc.

If you look really closely, the name Prussia contains the word "Russia" so someone would think that it has Slavic citizens (Mainly Polish as poland is south, or russian)
However the Germanic Kingdoms/Empires/States always liked to have control of Prussia.
Is it the same kind of situation like western slavic states (for example Czechoslovokia) where they are of slavic descend but have a big German influence?

I know that a lot of Northern nobles were driven in to exile (or killed) during and after the Harrying of the North, but I've always wondered what happened to the less hostile nobility. Did they just drop down a class and become part of the lower orders? If they did retain their noble status, are there any medieval noble houses which were founded by an Anglo-Saxon?

I know they helped build the railroad and stuff, but I have no idea how they were treated back then. If I am not totally ill informed that was also in a time were blacks were still enslaved.
