Odd, funny historical tales of people who were non-white? What makes these relatively difficult to find?

There are lots of top ten lists about weird historical footnotes, people, events, etc but after reading about guys like Big Nose George and events like the Boston mollasses disaster, I was sort of left wondering if there are equivalent stories for non-white cultures.

Not scary stories, not cult legends, not old wives' tales, but just odd little off-the-wall funny stories from Native cultures, African cultures, Asian cultures, etc. Is there a historical reason these are difficult to track down, or is it mostly due to just lack of reporting from major websites where you'd find these sorts of articles?

Help identify great uncle's WW2 campaign patches

My great uncle served in the Army during WW2, and I know he was in Anzio at least. I'm trying to determine what and where he may have served by these patches from his uniform. Unfortunately we do not have any other records from his service time.

The millenial generation is well known for our all consuming nostalgia. Did previous generations, say before the civil, war have the same type of starry eyed wonderment for "The Good Old Days"?

Can you recommend sources on the Klondike gold rush and northern frontier?

I am looking for sources of information on the Klondike gold rush and the northern frontier in general during that time. Particularly on the lives of the pioneers, and native peoples including their clothing, equipment, and vernacular. Essentially I want to learn more about the life and times surrounding Jack London novels.

Any books, websites, texts, you can recommend would be appreciated.

How did specialized anti-tank weapons of WWII (HEAT or shaped charge devices) fare as anti-personnel weapons?

Hey fine folks;

I'm trying to get a more detailed understanding of some of the early anti-tank weapons of WWII. While I understand how various types of ammunition and devices worked against tanks, I've yet to find much detailed information as to how these weapons effected non-tank targets.

In particular, I'm looking at shaped charge or HEAT weapons. For example, would a soldier throwing an RPG-43, or firing a panzerfaust at enemy infantry have any hope of inflicting harm, via explosive force or shrapnel, or are weapons of this ilk totally, hopelessly ill-suited for this kind of role?

How were relations between The United States and Imperial Russia?

Was there trade? Did they conflict or agree on global issues? Did they interact with each other on any real level and if so- how was this impacted by the communist insurrection? I've had a hard time finding anything mentioning the relationship between The United States and Russia prior to the World Wars that has any real depth.

Was There Ever a State in West Mexico Before the Tarascans?

Was there ever a state level society in West Mexico before the Tarascans in the late postclassic? Considering that the area bordered large states for centuries I would imagine it would rub off and one would appear somewhere, but I could be wrong.

Please Help us with Identifying the Uniform of this British Soldier.

This photo is of a young British (Merseyside) man, who is related to my partner. We are not entirely sure of who he is, but we believe it is my partners' grandfathers' brother. By determining the uniform and the era, my partner and I will be able to confirm the relation. This is the photo. Any help will be appreciated.

Please note "AMS(?)" written on his belt.

Thank you

Source Request: Augustine of Hippo

So, my little brother (college freshman) just told me that he's trying to locate secondary sources for a paper about Augustine's Confessions for a literature class. I promised to help, but, shocking as it might seem, the early church fathers are a bit outside of my wheelhouse. Can anyone help me help him? Biographies are always nice, but anything scholarly relating to late Roman religions, the early Catholic Church, etc would be more than welcome. He has access to JSTOR, etc. Time is a factor, so if you can give it to me quick and dirty, it will be much appreciated.

Book Recommendation: I'm looking for a good intro into Martin Luther

I'm going to an installation at the Morgan Library about Martin Luther's Reformation. I know a little about this, but would probably enjoy the event more if I had a more thorough background. So I want to read a good book that introduces the major issues leading up to the 95 Theses and the reactions to them.

How the invention of artificial dyes affect the existing dye market, fashion, and popular culture?

When artificial dyes were first invented, how available were they to consumers? Did only the rich have access, or were they cheap enough that everyone got access? How did this affect the existing dye markets and the international trade in traditional dye ingredients?

Did the introduction of a larger variety of colors for clothing cause a major shift in popular fashion?

Why do so many languages exist when a large amount of them have similar roots?

A lot of languages in Europe and America have Latin and Greek roots, so what caused different languages to be formed from those two when they worked fine for communication?

Also, how do different languages gain traction and people who are willing to speak a whole entire new language rather than stick with what they know?

I can understand language changing over time due to culture and the like, for example Australia, UK, and USA all speak the same language but have small differences in vocab that makes communication a bit more difficult.

On August 16th 1706, the Franco-Spanish fleet bound for Charleston sailed northwest to Saint Augustine along the way, where “a Dutch sloop separates the 72-gun Brillante.” What would a Dutch vessel be doing so far away from the closest major Dutch colonies (Aruba, Curacao)?

I found this excerpt in page 229 of Wars of the Americas: A Chronology of Armed Conflict in the New World, 1492 - 1997

During this time the British and the Dutch were allies against Spain and France. I’m sure Charleston --being a major British port at the time-- had British warships sailing around, but I don’t know what reasons a Dutch warship would have had to sail in these waters. Through some background research, I found out that Aruba and Curacao were important Dutch ports at the beginning of the 1700’s, but the thing is, they’re over a thousand miles away from Saint Augustine, Florida. What would a Dutch vessel (primarily a Dutch warship) be doing so far away from these two major Dutch ports? What importance would any other destinations in this region of the Caribbean have for a Dutch ship to sail over a thousand miles away from the nearest Dutch ports?

What effects did 20th century naval arms races (and treaties) have on the quality of life for sailors?

I'm reasonably familiar with the progression of naval arms races and the rough outlines of ship design over the 20th century - main gun caliber and armor belts, the like - but I haven't found many resources that indicate whether investment in a new battleship also meant better quarters or training. Would sailors aboard a pre-dreadnought have envied the lives of those aboard the latest battlecruiser?

Most of the information I've seen in regards to how personnel felt about other ships is based on ship class, e.g. "Tin Can Sailors" with cramped quarters bemoaning battleship sailors' access to ice cream machines, but I have found little regarding how (indeed, if) quality of life would differ between the same type of ships if one used newer technology to compete with other nations or was built to strict tonnage limits.

thanks!

How important was the U.S.A's intervention on the European front in WW2?

In movies and TV shows it always seems that the U.S saved Europe by entering the war and that all was lost without them. However I have a suspicion that that is not the case. I don't really know much historical fact though.

Looking for an alternative to Zinn's "A People's History of the US"; suggestions?

I am interested in learning what the everyday people--natives and colonials alike--did, thought, felt during the time of Columbus. I'm looking for a survey for lay audiences. Zinn's work is likely the most popular on the topic, but I have come to learn he does not have the best reputation among people who know infinitely more about the topic than I do.

However, when looking for an alternative, there haven't been very many suggestions in the sub's history--just a lot of topics and comments decrying his poor scholarship.

I'd love to have recommendations to read over the fall break.

HELP! Need a hand identifying my Grandfathers WW2 RCAF Service Medals & Badges.

IMAGE HERE: http://imgur.com/gallery/zuiRL

I know that the large red and white medallion is the Order of Canada and the silver pin in the bottom right hand corner is the General Service Medal. Beyond that I have no idea. Any help would be appreciated!

Like many men who returned, he very seldom spoke of his time overseas, and tried to simply readjust to civilian life. It has been nearly 10 yeas since he's passed on and I grow increasingly interested in hearing stories of his time served (1939-46). Thanks yall!
