How Do I find out who is buried on my parents' old property when some of the graves are marked only with stones?

My parents are in Eastern NC so the area's been inhabited for a VERY long time. There is a small family cemetery on site, but only 3 of the graves are marked with headstones. However, there are a few large round rocks near the cemetery, and ONLY in that area. My dad says they were ballast rocks for ships and thinks they mark the graves of slaves but we don't want to dig them up.

Can anybody tell me what kind of burial slaves were typically given? Were the graves usually marked? Or might it be something else entirely? I don't have a picture right now but it isn't hard to imagine, really. I think each rock is 6 - 10" in length and they are all very smooth.

Australia history Quealy's Unlucky 13 .....has anyone heard of this?

A little background, I have been working on my family tree and I came across some hand written notes from my great aunt. In her notes she documents names and dates which is great information however at the end of the note she writes the below information. Thomas Quealy’s father was one of 13 men who disappeared while on an exploration trip into the interior of Australia. The company was thereafter referred to as “Quealy’s Unlucky 13" (history of Australia.) should be 1850 That is it, no other information. My question is, has anyone heard of this Quealys Unlucky 13? I understand Australia is huge my guess is the trip would have originated from the Brisbane area seeing this is where some of my ancestors along that family tree are from. Google turned up nothing for me, figured reddit might be worth a shot.

I was sent here from /r/australia/

A friend of mine only calls the Trail of Tears "unfortunate" but doesn't consider it genocide. How bad was it really?

I don't know he's normally such a reasonable person, but he like Andrew Jackson a lot for some reason. I guess I'm mostly loom for more information myself because it was sort of glossed over in high school.

Weber's Protestant Work Ethic and the Capitalist Spirit - historians' opinions?

This is following up on a comment by /u/commiespaceinvader (great name by the way) in this thread

Commiespaceinvader cites Max Weber and the Protestant Work Ethic as a source of an ideological underpinning of capitalism. I had thought Weber's work was now regarded as not convincing. See for example https://m.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1nm309/what_are_the_critiques_of_max_webers_the/ or http://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2013/12/11099/

And, also, in the case of England, the Puritans might have won the Civil War, but I thought they pretty comprehensively lost the peace. I've read some 18th century English literature and the Scottish Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments and all in all the society then seems pretty consumerist. If anything, conspicuous consumption sounds like a better description.

So, what is the current historical opinion on Weber's theory? Is there evidence that people were really more into accumulating capital in 18th century England than they were in Renaissance Florence (for example)? What evidence do historians use to measure these things when there weren't any opinion surveys back then?

In an anime, a 17th century samurai is angered that his enemies have been raping captive peasants. What were the attitudes towards rape during this period in Japan?

The anime in question is Drifters which tell the story of several historical characters transported to a generic medieval fantasy world. It is very loose with historical accuracy.

A main character is Shimazu Toyohisa. In a recent episode, he is angered very much that his enemy have been raping the peasant women taken as captives.

What were the attitudes of samurai in the 17th century towards rape? How would this differ according to the social class of the women?

When exactly is this FDR campaign pencil from?

http://imgur.com/a/1Brqo

I bought this at an antique store because FDR is one of my favorite presidents. When I looked at it more closely at home, I saw that the dates were 1933-1945. Does this pencil have to be from his third term? My reasoning is that if it were from his first or second campaign, the dates wouldn't span 12 years. I haven't been able to find an identical pencil online, so I figured I'd ask here.

How was equality in death portrayed by the medieval church?

One of the aspects of Christianity that I often hear cited for it's popularity in Rome was equality in death, that the rich and the poor had the same two options for the afterlife. Considering how stratified the high and late medieval periods were, and how the churches themselves had beautiful effigies of the lords who built them, not John the cottar, as well as the fact that a lot of the clergy came from noble families, do we know how much this was portrayed?

As a secondary question, do we know how it played into their understanding of class hierarchy?

Was the treaty of Versailles literally signed at 11:11 on 11/11, and if so were the leaders there trying to be gimmicky?

Given the nature of WWI, I assumed they'd want the war to end as quickly as possible. And given I've heard stories of small skirmishes that resulted in death leading up to hours before the treaty was signed and the ceasefire commenced, it seems like once they came to the terms of the treaty they'd go ahead and end the war.

But the 11:11 11/11 thing almost makes it seem like they were trying to time it right to make the date more memorable, and I can just imagine the Germans, Austro-Hungarians, and the Turkish there just wanting them to get it over with.
