In Paris 1919, McMillan makes several references to new nations "getting their own German Prince." What's that all about?

Sorry, I don't have the text in front of me but I can try to dig up the passages if the question is too vague.

Saturday Reading and Research | November 05, 2016

Today:

Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.

So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

Why is Salem the only place that's brought up whenever witch trials are mentioned?

I was under the impression witch trials happened all around Boston. Why did Salem become the most infamous and the one everyone cites when talking about witch trials? Was it because of Arthur Miller's The Crucible?

During the period of racially segregated bathrooms in the US, what were the rules about white people using colored bathrooms, for example, as a protest against segregation?

Could a white supporter of the civil rights movement choose to use the colored bathrooms as a form of protest?

How would it be received by the colored people? Would it be seen as encroaching on their space or on the contrary, as a rejection of the segregation?

On a side note, was there a lot of standard differences between colored and white bathrooms? I mean, where the colored ones less maintained?

Books about early Christianity and great schism

Hi, I am curious about early christianity, First Council of Nicaea and great schism. Particularly want to read about the seperation, or more precisely how that seperation come to be between eastern and western churches after the council. As I said in the title, I am looking for introductory books about the topic. Bear in mind that I am no historian by any means, I am really looking for a book(s) that addresses general public rather than an academic publication. But if you want to explain it here, or direct me to a link that explains it, that would be welcome too. Thanks :)

Is there a good period drama (movie or show) that shows what life was like in Merovingian France/Gaul?

I love period pieces, and I realize that I don't know any cinema that shows what life is like in between Roman Gaul and and early Captian France. Is there any media out there that's a good drama during the Merovingian regime?

Why is the image of Hitler practically absent in Nazi German propaganda posters between 1939-1945?

The image of Hitler has been incorporated into the design of many Nazi German posters between 1927-1938; however, he only features in one definite poster that I can find between the actual years of WWII. This 1943 poster, which was recalled following the loss at Stalingrad in February, is found in the Bundesarchiv: 'Adolf Hitler ist der Sieg!' (Adolf Hitler is victory!).

I am completing post-graduate study on Nazi propaganda poster art and its contribution to the development of the 'Hitler Myth' concept through the use of Hitler's image and text i.e. 'Führer'. I am analysing 45 posters between 1927-1938, and have only found one (potentially two more) available for 1939-1945.

My current assumptions are that Hitler had established power and self-promotion was no longer crucial, a prioritisation on the propaganda war themes of enlistment, homefront sacrifice and enemy threat following 1939, a focus on anti-Bolshevism and 'total war' following Goebbels' 1943 speech, and a decline in the popularity of Hitler's leadership following the decision to throw the country into a second world war. However, this does not explain the unexpected incorporation of Hitler into 1943 poster art.

A Boston College affiliated database does show two potentially additional posters, http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/his/CoreArt/prop/ns10.html, which I cannot verify due to links leading to 'Page not found' and their lack of appearance elsewhere on internet datatbases.

(X-Post from /r/AskReddit)In Europe, particularly Great Britain, how is the American Revolution event taught? Could you explain the series of events that lead to the disagreement and how the reactions to that disagreement were viewed from the British side?

The reason I ask is because, in all education levels before higher education, it's generally taught that the revolution was a fight between liberty and tyranny. Particularly, the right to rule ourselves and get away from the unfair laws of King George III. However, now that I'm in college, I'm hearing a different version of that part of history that paints the start of the issues as a misunderstanding of the Tea Act and the colonist's gross overreaction. I'd love to hear what Europeans are being taught at all education levels.

Why was Julius Caesar assassinated?

The project I am doing for school currently is about Caesars assassination. Most people have looked into the actual event, but I am more interested in why the conspirators did it, and were they justified. Unfortunately, the books at my local library have dealt with the event in not enough detail, and since I am a student, I don't have the money to spend on books that may actually have the answer I'm looking for. I was wondering if you guys could help me out by explaining their motivations or by pointing me in the direction of detailed sources about the topic. Thank you.

Why are there sets of words used to describe prejudice against Jews, but not for other groups?

If someone discriminates against white people they're racist, if someone discriminates against Christians they're just seen as prejudiced against that group.

But I can't help but notice that there are entire sets of words that are regularly used to refer to prejudice against the Jews such as antisemitism or xenophobia. Hate-speech against Jews would be called "antisemitic hate speech" while hate-speech against any other race or religion would probably just be called "hate speech."

Is there a specific reason for this?

Surely steadying your revolver with two hands would be far more accurate than just using the one?
