Just perusing the Wikipedia articles on the religions of the RF and USA, it appears the non-religious numbers are somewhat comparable. If the Soviet Union was painted as so atheist and ungodly, why aren't there more atheists? Were those claims just inaccurate cold war propaganda?

Currently running the family business, which is not working out for me, and wish to go back to my passion of history. I have a BA in European History which is about 4 years old now and would like to pursue a masters in Museum Stuides, library science, public history or archivist. Currently in the process of applying to internships and volunteering at museums and organizations wherever I'd be accepted, as a 27 year old intern... I've heard several times that Amerindian soldiers were at an disadvantage fighting in the Chaco because they were used to the mountains.

Is there any evidence for this? It sounds more like Bolivian elites looking for excuses/blaming their Indian soldiers.

At the end of Suetonius's biography of Julius Caesar he makes specific note that the Jews in Rome mourned Caesar in their own unique and conspicuous fashion, but I had never heard any specific stories of Julius interacting with Jews. So, what was Caesar's relationship with the Jews like, as a statesman and military commander in the East? Did he do anything specific to evoke the loyalty of the Jewish community in Rome or were they simply participating in the general mourning in a different fashion?

I am more asking about whether or not Western Europe paid back the over $12 billion given under the Marshall Plan following WWII. I don't have the amount given over time to rebuild the Pacific. Not only was money provided, but so was aid with defense and trade.

Was the money paid back through the US renting land for their foreign deployed bases? How did these countries get out of their debt and turn it around so drastically? Why can't they forgive the debt, knowing that without our financing, the individual countries may still be recovering from the damage caused during WWII?

Roughly speaking, Roman Britain corresponds to England, and unconquered Britain corresponds to Scotland (and Wales), with Hadrian's Wall proximate to the dividing linen between England and Scotland to this day (though granted, that border has moved back and forth a bit over time).

Can one posit that the current divisions and distinctions between England and Scotland go all the way back to this Roman high-water mark? Did the mere fact of having a border in that location for such a long period of time, and/or the Romanization of natives south of Hadrian's Wall, create such a distinct culture and hence "otherness" to the people on the other side that we still feel the ramifications?

I recognize that a lot has happened in the intervening centuries since the Roman occupation of Britain - immigration of Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Danes, Normans, etc. Yet it seems as though there's always been a boundary of nationalities at about this location, so I'm curious whether there's a connection, or if instead it's merely a correlation.

I can't find anything that goes in depth about Caesar's choice to support Cleopatra instead of her brother/husband.

Most just briefly explain it with the fact that he was offendend by what the egyptian ruler, and his regency, did to Pompeius Magnus and with his relationship with Cleopatra.

I was reading a book on Japanese firearms in the feudal era. When the Portuguese brought firearms to Japan in 1543, the Japanese made various adaptions to them.

One such adaption listed was the addition of a helical main spring. What exactly is this device, and what advantage might it provide?

How accurate were they, and how long did it take to reload them? How easy was it for a group of people to disarm an armed fanatic? Were there any firearms with barrels as short as a modern gun? Could most people afford a firearm?

From what I have learn from my high school, western religion such as Islam and Christianity was spread to East Asia by several approaches.

Ex. Islam was spread to East Asia by the Arabian traders via the trade routes from Middle-East; Christianity was spread to Eastern Asia by adventuring preachers

But why didn't the religion from East Asia and India spread to the Middle-East, or the Europe continent? Why didn't Buddhism, Taoism, or Hinduism spread to the West?

The classical Greeks and Romans tended towards either recognition or syncretism in their reactions to foreign modes of worship. But were there any prominent examples of foreign religions they ran into and considered pure bullshit?

I have been lucky enough to see several Holocaust Survivors speak, and while they speak a great deal about their time in the camps and how blessed I feel to have lived through that process and eventually come to America , I have always wondered what if any opinions they might have about the Civil Rights Movement that they would have surely experienced shortly after coming to America. I'm wondering if there are any articles or papers published about this, did they see parallels in their experiences?
