I remember my HS history teacher mentioning that when women were first able to vote in a presidential election that they voted for who they thought was more handsome/attractive.

I started thinking about it and I did I quick google search and didn't come up with anything. Statistically do we know for a fact that women voted based on looks and not platform ideas?

I was reading about it recently and was just curious if anyone had good reasoning.

I was interested in the topic but I'm having trouble finding any coherent information about it. I know that Charlemagne attempted to sort of unite large parts of Europe but it seemed that after his death his legacy failed. I also read that Alfred the Great achieved to unite large parts of England. But I'm having troubles finding connections like triggers or events that really united these tribes or city states into larger united territories...?

Taking Livy as an example, are historians using Livy as a jumping off point because there are no other primary sources, or is it more a case of looking at archaeological findings and trying to create a narrative independent of Livy?

Brief note: I do believe that the moon landing happened.

I'm seeing this argument a lot here on Reddit that this is the biggest reason they believe that the moon landing happened is because the Russians didn't question it. I personally wouldn't view that as a solid argument unless the Russians knew more about the moon landing than what Americans had been told/had knowledge of, since then it would really just be us saying because one group of people believed something with the same information we had then we should believe it, too.

I came of age in the late 80s and early 90s punk scenes, well after the beginnings of punk rock but still early enough that I met a lot of very interesting people who were involved in the early scene.

Even in the Midwest, we heard stories about how the police would show up at all-ages clubs in LA and NYC to break up shows- very often with unrestrained violence. I heard also about some shows locally that were legendary for the violence that would occur when the police showed up.

It was always my impression from the stories that the police violence was unsurprising to the people in the situations, and that it was egged on and often encouraged by the city councils and police chiefs in various areas who were afraid of the punks.

Is there much actual evidence of police misconduct or systematic violence around punk rock and clubs? Was it as remembered by the old punks, or was there evidence that it was caused by punks being punks and attacking law enforcement first? Or were the stories more on the level of urban legend?

Why pick a city that would carve such a huge gash into Germany? Why not pick a more eastern city that wouldn't be as damaging? Was this even discussed?

Edit: It has been pointed out that the City of Danzig was assigned in the Treaty of Versailles. Very well. But why was Danzig picked instead of something a little less damaging to the Germans? Out of the desire for revenge?

I was reading a white paper that talked about women fighters during the Tamil Tiger rebellion in Sri Lanka. The women who fought the best tended to be those who had been victims of sexual assault or sexual violence. I've read stories about women like Boudica who rose armies due to the rape of herself and her daughters and I am curious to know what historians tend to think about this subject.

I was just curious about the crew sizes for ships from the 1700's. How many people were required to operate it? I couldn't seem to find a source that told me straight out.

It's sometimes said that if the atomic bombs had not been dropped on Japan, Japan would not have surrender, necessitating an invasion of the Japanese mainland, which would have cause a million casualties.

But why couldn't they have just compeltely encircled the island, quarantining it indefinitely?

At some point the Japanese might have had to surrender, but even if they didn't, they would no longer have been a threat to the world, compeltely trapped to their islands and with no materials coming in.
