Just doing some reading and this thought occurred to me. I did some research but couldn't really come up with anything.

The thought is, did shrinking British influence cause the World Wars? Was the fall of the empire inevitable even without the wars?

After WW2 why did the USA support the French in their struggle to maintain control over Vietnam and appose the Dutch reconquest of Indonesia. From what I understand they both had a lot of potential to fall to the Communist. In fact both the Soviets and the USA apposed the Dutch in Indonesia.

I've been playing a ton of Europa Universalis 4 lately, which covers the time period between 1444 and 1821. It's got me wondering, especially in Western and Central Europe, how legal immigration was handled between countries, duchies, principalities, etc.

To give a bit more specificity, take this example scenario: In 1650, you are a French craftsman that specializes in, say, blacksmithing. You've heard that blacksmiths are in high demand across the border in the Holy Roman Empire, so you decide to pack up your family and move. What would you need to do as far as getting legal permission to go into another established nation? Would there be any concept of legal citizenship at this time? Would you need any governmental documents? How would you settle into your new town in the HRE and avoid being deported to France or involuntarily pressed into the Imperial Army?

I realize this topic may be pretty broad, but I'm not looking for in-depth detail here. What I'm looking for is a general overview of some of the more common methods of immigration and how it was handled between the major powers (eg France, England, HRE) prior to the development of modern systems using passports and governmental departments regulating immigration. Any sources would be very welcome as well!

This is a family legend at this point and my grandfather has died so no way to find out details, but the story (told by him) was that after his ship got back to California after the surrender in Japan, he and his buddy just ....left. As in, got off the ship and just went back to Mississippi, didn't tell his commanding officer, etc. He was a farmer and the only son in his family and had 3 young kids so he said he figured the war was over and he was needed at home more. Wouldn't this have been desertion? (If so, there were never any consequences to my knowledge).

Was there any kind of large-scale "mustering out" after the war for those who didn't plan to stay in the Service or was it just a chaotic rush towards home by whatever means necessary?

Edit 2: I just asked my mom and she remembered another part of the story. She said her dad (my granddad) always maintained that if they hadn't left when they did, they would have had to stay for "months" more bc that's what all the others on the ship were saying. This scared them bc of how much they were needed at home (farming, taking care of older relatives/kids) so they saw their chance and took it. He said others that didn't leave were stuck in California for months before they could leave to get back to their families. Seems like the Navy would want to get sailors who weren't career back home, on the other hand, the whole ship can't up and leave at the same time, right?

How far back in time could we travel and still more or less maintain our current (western) living standards? How far do we have to go back until houses reflect modern day standards, regarding everything from electrical lights to indoor plumbing?

Not together, but both subjects. It's SO hard to find books that aren't very slanted towards or against one group.

I'm looking for Israel from 1948-today and more books on Pan Arabia from Ottoman dissolution to the present.

It is a common trope in fantasy that there are some books that are magical, and therefore dangerous, and other books that are just about magic, and therefore not. (And not just fiction — my in laws take this idea quite seriously with certain books inherited from my FiL.) Just how old is this idea?

Just like humans have eradicated species all over the world throughout history, there must have been some extinction going on when they came to America. I'm asking if there are any known cases of his happening when Native Americans were the cause.

Iv'e been trying to find this out and iv'e never really been able to pinpoint the exact time, from my understanding it seems to have happened in or slightly before the 17th century. Granted cannons were used then but i'm more concerned about when just footmen stopped using them.

What did they do, where Reps. and Senators elected. did they pass bills, etc..?
