I've been told that many last names were changed when people immigrated to the US. Why is this? Wouldn't the immigrant write down their names and that's what it would be and not be changed? I ask this because my last name is Dyc and it seems to be very uncommon but the family story is that it was changed from Dycowski but I don't understand why it would not have just stayed the same.

Did they wear any hearing protection, and if not, how could their ears survive being so close to a massive gun inside an enclosed turret? Especially with something like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/94/KW-2_1940.jpg

Alright so I'll just say first that there's definitely an emotional aspect to these sorts of questions and that definitely is part of the discussion. I'm not trying to offend people I'm just trying to learn.
In 1807, the US Federal government passed a law banning importation of slaves. What was the outcome? I'd imagine that the value of domestic slaves increased pretty much over night. What were the social implications? Were slaves treated better? Worse?

One thing I've noticed pop up a couple times in Scandinavian popular fiction and movies is the depiction of certain (sometimes quite small) towns having a strong association with a certain (often American in origin) pop music subculture, such as rockabilly, outlaw country, and later, various forms of punk and metal. Even if based on American music, some of these (from the brief references in pop culture) seem to be thriving local subcultures with a significant amount of homegrown variation. Can anyone elaborate on this phenomenon or point me towards sources (scholarly or popular)?

Or would his schism with Rome gone ahead irregardless of the ecumenical climate of continental Europe?
I only just noticed how close behind the Church of England was from Martin Luther. I have a vague memory of reading that Luther was denounced by Henry VIII. Did Henry hold on to those views after pursuing his own agenda with the Church?

I was wondering about the history of arms control legislation in the US. Is it a thing of this century, or does it have more of a history?

After Louis XVI was stripped of his kingship, his official name (as a citizen of revolutionary France) becomes Louis Capet. Wasn't his (royal) house the house of Bourbon? I understand that the Bourbons were descended from the Capets, but why give him the surname of his ancestors and not of his actual house? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I remember one of my history professors in college said that 1 of the many reasons that Rome fell was that its government was not suited to ruling the large area of land that eventually became its empire; in essence that the Roman system of government was suited for a smaller nation. Is there any truth to this claim?

Seems more cost effiecient to just kill your enemies instead of taking them to camps etc. For example why did Nazi-germany bother to take russian war prisoners? they could have used the soldiers in the frontlines instead of guards.

Curious because a story I'm working on revolves around a person driving a stolen car across the continental US. I don't want to set the story in a period where someone knowledgable would read it and say, "No way he could've gotten away with that."
I apologize in advance if this belongs in a different sub. Thanks in advance!
