Need to do a lot of research on a British tanks warfare in ww1 but know very little. What tanks were used and any books to recommend on the topic?

Title. It seems pretty far from land to have reached by a canoe... Was it just a long, random voyage?

Since it seems the Trojan War as depicted by The Illiad was never even close to happening (much to my recent disappointment), what's the purpose of the story? Surely there is an allegory, some moral to the immense story, some sort of purpose for compiling and maintaining the story lines? I'm actually more interested in the Illiad.

I'm very curious what the understanding of the world was for them, outside of their mythology. The pythagoras theorem was discovered independently by eastern and western civilisations, did they discover it as well? Thanks in advance.

From what I've read, the favourable opinion is that it's named after Vespucci. However, on an episode of QI I've just watched they rejected this and claimed it is actually named after Amerike.

I noticed that Schenectady is attacked during King William's War, and again in the Seven Years War. Was there any reason in particular or did the city just happen to be raided?

I've heard it argued that the Soviets were actively planning to attack the Germans during WW2 when Barbarossa was launched, and it was just a matter of time until this came to pass. Several military historians have proposed this idea and while i haven't read their work (not sure if available in English) I can name a few historians names I've heard others mention - Mikhail Melyutkhov, Boris Sokolov, Joachim Hoffman.

Anyways, I'm wondering how valid the idea was that the Soviets intended to double cross Hitler but were themselves double crossed first? I've always discounted it myself, reasoning that the Soviet's poor initial performance and Stalin's own behavior in the immediate aftermath reflected genuine surprise and unpreparedness of the Sovet leadership, if they'd been intending to attack Germany in the coming months or even weeks.

What does AskHistorians think? This is kind of a blindspot in my own WW2 knowledge because finding information from Soviet, or Russian sources can be difficult without being able to read Russian.

I just heard someone claim that Sinclair's meat processing plant was probably not accurate because if it was, we would have known the name of the person who was ground up and sold as lard. Is there an actual case where someone was ground up and sold as food? Is any of Sinclair's description reliable?

So I'm pretty sure this is a question that gets asked a lot because, well, whenever it comes to History, Godwin's law is in full effect.

I was watching some behind the scenes stuff about the New Star Wars film when they got to talking about the new bad guys, the "First Order". They said that they were inspired by the question "What if all those high ranking Nazis that fled to South America tried to get together once again?" Well their end result plot wise was essentially the Empire going the way of "What if Neo-Nazis had actual resources and older Nazis to guide them in establishing a state?"

So this got me wondering, I imagine many high ranking Nazis never actually made much of an effort to meet with their former peers--after all that could lead them to being found quicker--if they even knew that others had escaped to South America with them.

While I doubt they'd be really keen on the whole "National Socialism" thing given their predicament and how well it worked the last time (not to mention they were likely not as fanatically devoted as Hitler and some of his closest peers were if they fled and went into hiding) is there any record of if they had any plans while in hiding, or attempted to influence the politics of their new countries?

It's an interesting concept, and I'd like to know more about just what many of them were doing while in hiding.

I was watching a documentary on Ancient Egypt and they talked about door locking devices that were left in tombs. The devices were not for locking doors in the tomb, but for locking doors in the real world. Some historians hypothesized that these devices may have lead to formalizing privacy. Wondering if anyone had any information on these ancient locks?

I was re-reading Emma Goldman's work entitled The Traffic In Women and she cited Havelock Ellis' Sex and Society which said that "it would seem that the origin of prostitution is the be found primarily in a religious custom..."

Is this a generally agreed upon idea? Or is it outdated? If prostitution's origins aren't in religion what are it's origins?
