Hello, I want to know if The American slave owners in the south were more secular than that of the abolitionists.

We strongly associate tomatoes with Italy and potatoes with Ireland as their, for lack of a better word "mascot" foods, how different was this before the "discovery" of the New World?

Beyond a few cultures I know of, and the ones I know of tend to be a bit more on the fringe, why was inheritance always based on who the father was? It's pretty hard to contest who the mother is, but not so much with father's. Wouldnt it just be easier to pass that stuff down the mothers family line? I would think it would avoid a lot of controversy.

Say I'm the son of a man who's just died in 1981, would their "possessions*" go to me or would they go to the state? Would my father write a will? What would happen to the stuff we used after he died?

What kind of suffrage did they have? How where elections run? Could anyone run for office? What kind of offices where there to run for? Also, how did these republics react to the formation of the U.S.A. and it's constitution??

I would also be interested in hearing about the republics in older time periods, ancient Athens or similar states would also be interesting. Also, if there where republics outside of Europe, how did they function??

And if so, did it spread outside the Greek community, particularly to other Ottoman Subjects?

I am an avid reader of modern management theorists (Drucker, Mintzberg, Collins and so many others). It is a fascinating field, but there is a general understanding that "modern management" can only be considered to be less than 200 years old.

But I have been thinking whether we have any such literature of the introspective kind from places like Rome, China, India? Something that will give insight into how they thought about running their extremely complex enterprises even without all the tools and technologies that we have today.

I don't have any particular time period in mind - just curious to find out how this was looked at in the past.

I've only heard relatively recent (ex. mid-1800s onward) politics described as part of this spectrum. I'm interested in hearing where that concept comes from.

I'd also be interested in hearing whether people in the past, before the concepts of "left" and "right", thought of political positions in a similar way (as in, tied to specific political groups or to political platforms with other unrelated issues.)

Were existing professions and skills taken into account at all when handing out assignments?

So, I've been doing a bit of reading about the Holocaust - and one of the things I read about was how many other European countries had anti-Semitic views as well as heavy eugenics policies, so I guess I was just wondering if The Holocaust could have occurred with another country at the helm? Hi, I'm an American student who's about to start my first semester traveling abroad in Paris,France. I went to a typical shitty high school and came out with a meaningless high school diploma. I now have the opportunity to study abroad, but I have little to know knowledge of world events and the last thing I would like is for people to associate me as the "typical dumb American". My question is, Could you perhaps suggest a book to me about world events of the 20th century? Not to the extent to be a scholar, but to the extent that if something were mentioned in a conversation it wouldn't completely go over my head. Thank you in advance

I was looking up alternate ways to organize military units for a world building exercise, but I started to notice that every military I looked up had the same organization type as the "standard" European model, with some slight differences in nomenclature or the exact composition of each level.

Why is this one military model so prevalent? Is it somehow better than other ones that have been tried? Is it a legacy of European colonization? Is it to interface easier with foreign militaries?
