WW1 Treaty of Versailles; Germany was forced to pay reparations...but

But they where allowed to pay with deutschmarks, not gold or silver. Pretty soon their money was worthless because of inflation soooo they where paying their billion dollar war fines when a trillion deutschmarks couldn't buy you a loaf of bread? Does this mean the Germans pulled a fast one on us? And we essentially got nothing?

What was life like for physically disabled people prior to the invention of wheelchairs?

I'm not trying to be insensitive, I'm just not sure what the specific term is for people who are unable to walk due to physical disability, but obviously I mean these people in particular.

How did people get around without the use of their legs in a time before wheelchairs? Did they at all? What would life have been like for them?

Why is Australia ethnically so much more European compared to South Africa?

Prior to colonization Australia and South Africa seem to be similar. They are both similar in latitude and both had indigenous people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. During colonization, both areas had large population losses due to smallpox and other introduced diseases. So why is it that Australian is only 3% indigenous, but Black Africans make up about 80% of the population of South Africa?

What caused names to loose their original meaning and become little more than names?

Recently I was surprised to learn that the names of characters in the Iliad all mean something. For example, Telemachus's name literally means "far fighter" in Greek. Why does it seem like later names in Ancient Greece and Rome and modern names do not possess such meaning? What happened to naming children in this way, and why isn't it as common as it seems to have been?

Why do we use base-10 mathematics?

Hopefully this is the right place for this. I was just thinking today, the use of base-10 mathematics is somewhat arbitrary, just wondering how that came to be.

How often do significant sources from ancient history emerge?

I recently read The Fall of Carthage by Adrian Goldsworthy, which makes tremendous use of Polybius as a source of information, as I imagine all narratives on the Punic Wars must. Adrian mentions in the book that only 5 of the original 40 volumes of Polybius' work The Histories survive in their entirety, and the rest may exist in fragmentary form. Is there any plausible chance that the remaining 35 books will be discovered in their entirety in some archeological site, or are they almost certainly lost to the ages? What about other similar sources? Are works of equal importance occasionally discovered in the modern age?

Outside of the seldom used Thompson and M3A1, I've noticed that the United States army doesn't really utilize submachine guns, and when it does, it uses foreign models. Can you explain this American aversion to the SMG?

How did the Great Depression affect Asian/Middle East countries?

I've tried looking for information but there isn't much info out there and I even found some contradicting statements some claiming China/Japan weren't affected that much to the total opposite. And then when it comes to the Middle east I can't even get vague information.

In WWII were there any reports of either military or civilian injuries or deaths caused by anti-aircraft weaponry, or any type of air based weaponry, missing a target and falling back to the ground?

When I watch documentaries on WWII bombing raids or even patrol missions they always talk about the unimaginable amount of ammunition shooting upwards at the planes. Did any of that ever fall back and hit people? Even in dogfights things like shell casings or debris from hit planes causing injuries?

How much of a shock was the Ardennes Offensive to the Western Allies?

We're taught that the Battle of the Bulge was a surprise attack on the American forces which cost the western allies a great deal. But how much of a surprise was it? Were the allies thinking that the war would be over in a few weeks to a month and already kicking back, or did they have at least a little time to prepare for the offensive?
