Whenever I've had to study American History (8th grade and 11th grade) it was always taught that the War was about states' rights and economic differences. Were the economic differences really so intense that they could seriously considered to be a cause of the war? What other rights were the southern states fighting for besides the right to nullify laws prohibiting slavery?

Also, I'm interested in hearing some of the history behind the discrimination against Romani, so feel free to ramble on as you see fit!

When being taught about slavery terms like chattel slavery tend to be thrown around without being properly defined. I specifically want to know what separates the American, Arabian, Western European, Eastern European*, Roman, and Greek systems from one another.

*The whole Slav thing. I hear about it a lot but haven't been able to find anything on it. Feel free to lump in any similar forms of slavery into this category.

I saw a map once a long time ago of the Mediterranean from the Phoenicians' perspective, and the strait of Gibraltar was at the top of the map ("west" was on top). It makes sense, considering their location on the Mediterranean.

So what changed? Why is it now standard to put "north" at the top of the page?

I can see they are still being used, so I guess it's okay, I am just wondering if the buildings themselves were built so strong they can still be used without any reinforcement.

If a knight in the middle ages (between the fall of the roman empire and the age of enlightenment) were sick with flu, food poisoning, etc. would the knight be excused from battle or would he be expected to fight.

I am curious to know if the ratification of both of these sets of laws were independent of each other. To be more clear, I mean the politics surrounding the passing of both of these.

I mean what are the chances that a mythical creature, would be that close to an actual animal that was later discovered.. unless the ancient Chinese did their own fossil research!

I'm reading about Battle of Leuctra and there is a description of the initial meeting of the Thebans and Spartan lines. The description states that a large number of Spartans were killed more or less instantly upon impact of the phalanxes. Was this because the Spartan formation was not fully formed and their lines were penetrated or did the sheer force of a 50 man deep formation just overwhelm them?

If it was the force of the impact would this have crushed the front row of the Theban rank also?
