Is there any historical significance? e.g. "Vaterland" "Mother Russia" I had a teacher say something about this once but I've forgotten.

Long story short, I'm doing some research into different battles throughout American history, especially the mid-19th century (Mexican-American War through Civil War). I've found plenty of secondary sources, but what I'm really looking for is a more detailed list of how the armies were organized and which units were where at different points in time. Does something like this exist? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

From what I've read, the country actually experienced relatively stable socioeconomic and political conditions for a while preceding the revolution. Furthermore, the aims of the leadership were extremely varied. So... why did it take place? It actually sounds more like a chaotic frenzy than a revolution.

I'm interested to know whether or not the songs played in modern remembrance day ceremonies were ever played on the fields of battle to honour those who were about to give their lives.

Etiquette and manners were quite serious business in aristocratic Europe after the common era. But what exactly happened if you gave up and used your salad fork to eat your roast? Were there ever wars, revolts, or political upheaval due to lack of adherence to etiquette?

I'm looking for some sources on pre-colonial African history. Nothing too detailed for now - broad strokes are fine.

I can mainly think of car companies but I am sure there are more. Anyway BMW, Mercedes, VW (and its subsidaries), Porsche and a lot more all excited as German was split. Knowing that the east was struggling financially, what did these companies do during the cold war. Were they all part of the west which allowed them to progress into the giants they are today? Were there similar competitors in the east that failed? Did the western companies merge with the eastern? Did the companies split with Germany and then merged in the 90s?

I was just watching We Were Soldiers... Why didn't America use bulletproof vests during that battle, or in general during that conflict?

Edit: was the fighting really as gruesome as it was in the movie? Was America really fighting that close to the enemy and losing that many men?

I've recently been playing Assassin's Creed: Black Flag again, and the pirate lifestyle captivated my interest. I'd be very thankful if you would answer some questions for me:

What was the daily life like for a pirate captain?

What was the daily life like for a crewman?

Is there any websites/subs that explain the 'pirate code', and their beliefs?

There is a famous quote attributed to Napoleon speaking to a naval engineer (Robert Fulton) in 1800 that may be apocryphal as I've never found a solid source for the quote but it is commonly retold as

"What sir, would you make a ship sail against the wind and currents by lighting a bonfire under her deck? I pray you excuse me. I have no time to listen to such nonsense."

Even if the quote is just an invention it seems that the French Empire's Navy didn't begin adopting steam power until almost 50 years later. Were there any other navies in that time period who had a significant force of steam powered ships and were they able to compete with more traditional navies? When did steam navies render sail power obsolete militarily? What about commercially?

Other than the perceived absurdity intentionally lighting a fire on a ship were there good reasons for the French Empire to stick to what they had? Or is it possible that Napoleon missed out on an opportunity with that?

I keep reading about this, i.e Saladin agreeing to let Crusaders forage for food unmolested in certain circumstances.

I'm imaging knights picking berries in the wood but I'm sure that's not accurate.

Were they sent back to the front? Did they see combat again? Did they survive the war? How did they end up?
