Humor and exaggeration do not cross language barriers or the limitations of text very easily. How does someone determine implied humor or exaggeration from a direct sentence in an ancient text?

Particularly in the classical period around Southern and Eastern Europe. How much was known about disease and illness? Did they recognize and separate illness' from each other based off of symptoms or something of the like, or were all diseases/illness' treated as though it were all the same?

Carthage remained a major North African city even after its sacking. How effective was the Latinization of the general area Carthage controlled before the Punic Wars? How likely would your average resident of Carthage in, say, 50 AD, have been to speak Latin vs. Carthaginian? Would the area have been just about as "Romanized" as Gaul or any other comparable Roman conquest before the Vandals and later the Arabs conquered the area?

As a non-historian (just a regular joe trying to understand history), what is a/the book(s) that are considered the standard coverage of the social/cultural/political angles of that conflict.

There's been a few related questions to this in the past, but none that have answered it from the particular angle I'm looking at.

I understand that, on paper, the ROC was one of the major Allies and ended up victorious, etc. But geopolitically, the ROC was far, far behind the others at the time, with an ongoing civil war, factionalism, very little industry, very little ability to project power militarily, and so on. What was the pragmatic motivation for giving China, as it existed then, such a prominent and powerful role in the UN?

So I assume the average person could understand Shakespeare's plays when they were first being performed. However, I'm curious if this is how the average person would speak in the context of daily life. I ask because there have been movies that, while watching, I think to myself "nobody would ever talk like that in real life" and I am just wondering if the average person would also think that while watching a Shakespeare play back when they were first being performed.

I'm confused by how Mercantilism works, and I can't seem to find any books on it. I know it has something to do with balance of trade between nations, which also involved their colonies. Colonies produced just for their parent nation, but the colonies weren't feudal, or were they a kind of international feudalism where they produced for the parent country but kept some for themselves? Was there trade in currencies, or was everything done with gold reserves? Or was it done with straight trade of goods across nations?

I know what I look like from mirrors and picture, but people then might not have had easy access to them. Would they be likely to recognize a portrait or picture of themselves?
