Did Stalin offer an alliance to the west before signing the Molotov-Ribbentop pact?

I just found this article that seems to suggest that Stalin offered an alliance to the west, but it was rejected, forcing him to ally the Germans. Is this true? This article has no sources so I'm dubious to its claim

We've heard of the Berlin Wall, but what did the Soviets do about the rest of East Germany to prevent escape into West Germany? Were there barriers? Was escape common?

So most East Berliners were prevented from escaping into West Berlin by the infamous wall. But Berlin itself was deep in East Germany. What would prevent a typical East German from say, Dresden escaping to Hannover? Was there a wall? Border guards? Surely the Soviets couldn't have patrolled the entirety of the East/West German border 24/7.

I'm looking for video footage of 1919-1946 Germany, Can anyone help?

I've recently become interested in World War II, and I'm looking for a website that allows one to download footage of Germany during 1919 to the aftermath of world war II (~1946).

However, most videos on youtube that have these videos either have annoying watermarks or names printed onto the video, or have been uploaded by neo-nazis and have distasteful music played with the audio.

Please respond with a link to a website which provides footage (preferably in colour) of the aforementioned time period. Since there isn't any copyright attached to these videos it shouldn't be hard, but I still can't find such a website unfortunately. Thanks everyone

Is there any legitimacy to the Black Egyptian Hypothesis?

I recently read "The Destruction of Black Civilization" by Chancellor Williams, and was intrigued by what's known as the "Black Egyptian Hypothesis", which appears to be heavily criticized - though he seemed to have laid out a fairly strong argument. I'm interested in hearing some perspectives as to whether it's ridiculous or somewhat legitimate.

[META] Why are there three subreddits for asking historical questions? (/r/history, /r/askhistorians, /r/askhistory)

I seriously cannot understand why there are three different subreddits for asking historical questions. And as a potentially-uninformed gripe, the difference between /r/askhistorians and /r/askhistory seems pedantic at best. What is the purpose for having the latter two?

What was the relationship between Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson like?

When I was a child my Grandmother told me that Lyndon Johnson regarded Richard Nixon as a traitor. My Grandmother claimed that Nixon sold the US out in Vietnam and because of this Johnson (because he was a good Texan) hated Richard Nixon. Is there any truth to this? Before or after Watergate?

Why didn't Venice colonize the New World?

As far as I know, Venice in the late 15th century was one of the foremost naval and commercial powers in Europe, with the massive ship-producing power of the Arsenal and it's trading network throughout the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Why did it never join Portugal and Spain and the other European powers in colonizing the New World?

After further thought, I suppose the same question can be asked about Genoa too.

Why didn't the North American native tribes build large structures and city like settlements like the South American natives such as the Aztecs did?

My current impression is that South American natives were much more developed technologically and govern-mentally than their North American counterparts. But I feel like I just have a few misconceptions.

What sort of treatment, professionally speaking, was given to German academics whose credentials were earned during the Nazi era?

I'm most especially interested in what would have happened to someone who earned their Phd in, say, Anthropology in 1939 for example, with their dissertation on some racist, pro-Aryan BS. Were people like this, whose studies were hopelessly tainted by the ideological tilt of the period, stripped of their degrees? Were they "merely" ostracized from the greater academic community? Or was this mostly overlooked, assuming they went through denazification?

And relatedly, what about someone who's studies were far removed from NDSAP ideology?
