I'm not really big on that time period, but what would have changed if the Brits had continued their initial success and there was no French intervention? How big of an impact was the loss on the British empire?

I've been reading Antony Beevor's World War Two book, and one thing he says I didn't know was that the US government was firmly expecting to go to war with Japan at some point in the 40s. One example he gives is that a warning about Pearl Harbor was not passed on, on the grounds that they'd already had plenty of warnings.

Was a war with Japan expected by the US public as well as the government in this period? Or were they perhaps aware of tensions in the way that the European public knew about the potential for war with Germany?

So.. we call people Nazi/Hitler alot.. for being uptight, stubborn, demanding, whatever.. before the actual Nazis, what was (if any) the hyperbolic slang for such people?

Why was there never a big political movement in Egypt to promote Egyptian nationality as opposed to Arabic, like the Kemalists in Turkey? Both had been ruled by Arab empires for a very long time, but it didn't happen in Egypt. Why?

To the degree that the local culture was completely replaced by Arabic? Also, I've heard the claim that Arabia was overpopulated significantly in the 7th century, is this true and how significant was it as a factor in the Arabasation of the Fertile Crescent and the Maghreb?

It seems like anytime someone talks about the art movement futurism, talk of fascism isn't very far behind. What was the connection between politicians like the NFP and the futurist art movement and how did futurism come to be regarded as a fascist art movement?

Obviously it would be recognizable as a Seder, but I'm wondering if we know of any differences. Also, more broadly, do we know anything of the personal or private spiritual lives of the Second Temple period? Thanks.

In the past, different languages had words for the color orange, such as "saffron", "red-yellow", etc.

However, in modern language, it seems like many languages either have the word "orange" or overlap the word with the fruit. Examples:

• Bulgarian: "oranjevo"
• Japanese: "orenji"
• Mandarin: "ju se" (orange color)
• Korean: "olenji"
• German: "orange"

What puzzles me is this:

1. To my knowledge, most languages will have other words for the color, such as "cheng se" in Mandarin and "daidairo" in Japanese; why would the word "orange" be adopted? And why orange, but not blue, green, pink, etc.?
2. Most "super loan words" (i.e. present in many languages, such as "radio") are for things that were introduced externally, that had no prior presence. How did the word orange take over traditional words for the color?

I heard that if you were an excommunicated as king it was serious because all other Christian countries would invade a "nonbeliever" country.

After learning Spanish this has always confused me.

I know as late as the 1950s there was a large Greek community in Istanbul, but today it is quite small. In 1453 would Constantinople be over 95% Greek speaking? When did that number reach 50%? What is the latest date you could get by in the city only speaking Greek?
