Everything I've read about the battle of Stalingrad implies the Germans were really on a roll. They leveled the city with their air superiority. Took key parts of the city and had the soviets on the run. Even got to the river. What lead to the drastic turn for the 6th army? What do you consider to be the fatal decision for the Germans? I just don't understand how an army that had everything going for them ended up surrounded.

I know they lived on the Scottish mainland, but I just wondered if anyone knew for sure if they were found on the islands too? Just out of interest for something I'm writing.

Any one have any ideas? Looking to find something cool for my research paper that is about 8 pages long.

When WWI was declared, what would happen with someone from a country opposed to the one he or she was currently living in? Do they fight for or against their country of origin or where they sent back to where they were from?

I did a search and found last year's post about the master book list, which recommended The Dutch Republic: Its Rise, Greatness, and Fall 1477-1806 by Jonathan Israel. This definitely sounds like a good fit and I'm going to check it out, but I just wanted to see if anyone else could comment on its quality or suggest any other good books?

I'm interested in reading about the republic's history from its independence struggle all the way to its eventual fall in the French Revolutionary wars, as well as other aspects of its history including the Dutch colonial empire, the Dutch East India Company, the unique nature of the Dutch Republic's political system, and the military history and characteristics of the DR. Any recommendations would be really appreciated!

Hey guys, I'm taking a class on ancient Greek cult (primarily Classical) and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a possible topic of investigation that I could research for a term paper. My professor wants us to pose a question and then generate a thesis around that. I'm loving the class but this is the first classics course I've taken and I feel really out of my depth. Any inquiries I've had don't seem to be very "researchable" or well suited as a subject of a long paper -- either the question is easily answered/explained or I'm unable to find sufficient sources on the thing I'd like to write about (or they're all in German...).

If anyone has any suggestions or advice I'd really appreciate it!

I've never been interested in studying history before, but since the start of this year I've just had this strong desire to learn and I'm sturggling finding good places to get information (I meen seriously I have no idea were to begin and it must sound silly to you reading this). I have a couple of books on ancient history and have a vague idea on the timeline of the modern world but I remember next to nothing from History lessons from school and whenever I search topics I only get as far as Wikipedia and websites made for teaching young children.

WWII is especially interseting to me at the moment and if somebody here could point me in the right direction for learning as much as I can on the subject it would be really appreciated.

I've been looking into pandemics that predate the Black Death and in general have only found European ones. The Athenian plague, the Antonine plague, Cyrian plague, the Plague of Justinian etc.

Most of these are mysteriously described as having come from the East or from North Africa/Middle East via India/China but I've been unable to find anything on the origins of these epidemics. Are the sources there but just not well known or are there no sources?

Were there other ideas that the Nazi government went through to deal with the "Jewish problem"? Or was the mass killings within the Death Camps the plan that Hitler had from the start?

In history classes I never heard much about what was happening in the middle east during this time. Were they active parties? Was the sociopolitical situation similar to what it is now?

Like the title says I want to start studying about Ancient civilizations. I am mostly interested in learning about the Near-Eastern and Middle eastern civilizations, like Assyria, Babylon, Sumeria, Israel/Palestine and also Greece and Rome. What books, documentaries, or even websites would you recommend to start me on my journey?
