I was told by a friend that there was footage of an actual refusal by troops to engage in Vietnam. I watched Vietnam the Quiet Mutiny, which was interesting, but not what I'm looking for.

I'm reading Blundering to Glory, by Owen Connelly, and his contention is that Napoleon was basically very lucky, had superb sub-commanders and was opposed by sub-par enemy commanders. Was Napoleon a military genius, as would seem to be popular opinion, or was he just a mediocre commander who had circumstances on his side?

I'm studying geography and I'm doing research about Berlin and the wall. Some of my questions are pretty specific and Google can't really help me. Anyone willing to help? Thanks! My research is about the western part of Berlin These are some questions:

*What is the influence exerted by the wall on the city -geographic developments?

*What where some limitations that the wall created for the Western part of Berlin?

*How was capitalism visable in West Berlin?

*Are there still things visable of the influence of wall?

I'm not sure, if this is the right sub, to post this question. I did some research in the internet with no real satisfactory result. My question is: What was the color of paper around the year 1700? Today, paper from this time looks mostly brownish, but that might be from yellowing over time, right? What was its original color?

If, say, a merchant in France was expecting a shipment from England, how would they communicate what date they were expecting it on?

it's clear to see that after the genius that Hannibal exhibited in the Battle of Cannae, the 2nd Punic War against Rome was very much in his hands. By not deciding to march on Rome, Hannibal may have ultimately lost the war for Carthage and changed the course of human civilization, culture, and language forever.

But why? I've read many things about the possible reasons for Hannibal's hesitance, the strongest possibility being his lack of faith in passing Rome's fortified walls, but is there a more concrete answer to this game-changing question?

Russia has all this Pacific coastline, reaching down to Korea, Japan etc., but apparently only one city of note, and that no larger than Portland. By contrast, the U.S. & Canada have LA, SF, Seattle, Vancouver, etc.

Why the big difference? Is it just a matter of distance?

• I often find myself coming here to look at specific "eras" - I know these are difficult to define but I would really love a way to filter posts by "ancient" or "modern".

• I often see posts with 2-5 comments, but have no idea whether it's "worth" clicking into (e.g. whether the comments are helpful and sourced). I doubt it's possible, but it would be really great to have a way to find out how many flaired users have responded to a post without clicking into it.

Even if the above cannot be achieved, are there any existing ways to simulate any of that capability?

I know it's taught in a lot of schools and want to know if it's worth all the attention.

Did they believe that they would just crash into China and there was nothing in between them except for a massive ocean? What about Sea Monsters, I know that they were mainly just a tale to spook explorers but are there any reports of sailors encountering HUGE fish or things they had no idea what to think of? Did they truly have absolutly no idea that there was something between them and Asia across the Atlantic, or did they assume that they were going to at least find a chain of islands or something?

Over 100 years passed in the American Southeast between Hernando de Soto and French explorers. Did native indians pass down oral histories on what they saw, the content of their visitations, etc?
