In "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby mentions that because he fought in WW1 the British let him study at an English University (Oxford) for free, or low cost. Did this actually happen for American troops in WW1?

Is there evidence of smallpox virus remaining infective post-mortem? Can you give some references to historical protocols for handling smallpox corpses?

Ebola and smallpox seem to have pretty similar transmission, expressing in aerosols and bodily fluids, direct contact, contaminated objects, but also conventionally limited transmission (distance, infectivity window, etc.) Did corpses remain infective, were there special protocols for handling them?

For bonus points, did smallpox virus persist in semen after recovery?

The 1988 film "Akira" is often referenced as a landmark in the development and popularization of anime in the West. How was anime viewed in the West like before "Akira," and what made this film a watershed in changing those views?

Or, is the conventional wisdom wrong, and "Akira" really wasn't that important in the development or popularization of anime in the West at all? If not, why not?

Can y'all recommend me some books or other sources on the Greek underworld?

Hi y'all,

So I'm doing a research paper on the Ancient Greek view of death, centered around passages from Homer's Odyssey. I've got a few great sources already (I'll list them below), but I was hoping y'all could point out some other good places to look--My university's library catalog is horrendous and has revealed very few helpful sources. I'm hoping to stick closer to the time period of Homeric thought, but so far I haven't found many sources centering around his time, so my research bleeds up to Plato and Sophocles.

Anything y'all think might be useful would help, thanks!

So far, the sources I have include:

Homer's The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fagles

Sophocles' Antigone, Translated by Robert Fagles

The Greek Myths by Robin Waterfield

Hades: the History, Origins, and Evolution of the Greek God by Jesse Harasta

Plato's The Republic, translated by Allan Bloom

Question about modern army organization.

Bernard Cornwell says that British soldiers lived in their regiments during the Napoleonic wars, and it seems brigade and division assignments would change each engagement. The same seems to be true (in fiction) about the US Civil War. However, in WW2 stories the soldiers, at least the army, seem to identify with their divisions, not regiment.

Now days it seems military personnel transfer every few years (that's based on knowing some senior non-coms hanging on for their twenty years (and I spent part of my childhood in West San Antonio, so my impression passes the twenty year rule, though only for the air force)).

So, was the regiment that much more important to the soldier in the nineteenth century, and how and why did it become so unimportant by WW2 and now?

Did any historical military force ever use daggers as a primary weapon rather than simply for utility or backup?

Just curious from the amount of rpg's where characters can go toe to toe with a sword wielder and sometimes parry better despite the shortness of the blade demanding far greater accuracy and whether their was any real world basis for a dagger focused fighting style.

Why did Europe descend into fascism after WWI and not communism?

Reading a book that makes the claim that after WWI Europe was dissatisfied with, among other things, capitalism for being dominated by the military states and industrialists.

My question is: If the normal people are dissatisfied with capitalism, why was fascism, which heavily utilizes capitalism to 'serve' the state, seen as attractive? Wouldn't a communist state be more attractive to a continent that was tired of capitalism?
