ISIS seems to cite Muhammad's war waging as a guide on how to fight wars. How truly brutal were these early conquests lead by Muhammad?

In essence, were they as full of beheadings, slavery, and crucifixion as ISIS makes it seem?

What happened to the Puritan theology and institutions?

So, I know that the puritans had some basic and profound beliefs, such as predestination and rejection of texts other than the bible. But, there aren't puritans walking around today, or at least I think not. So did their beliefs transform into any religious institutions that still exist? I am wondering specifically about the political and theological transformation over time. edited for grammar

National Socialist Propaganda posters. Any online source?

Hi all,
I'm looking for a quick reference for NS propaganda posters, especially those with anti-bolshevik/anti-russian content. I'm looking for a striking source illustrating that post-war antirussian sentiments in West Germany was rooted in NS propaganda.
Does anyone know good online sources?
Thank you!

How fast did language change and evolve in pre-mideival to mideival Europe?

After reading Danish litterature in high school i noticed that there really hasn't, at least from a Danish point of view, happened a significant change in the difference of written language from a century ago to modern day.

However A century before that (late 1700's- early 1800's), then I would say the language is very very different from ours today. Comprehending what is being said in these enlightenment era litteratures starts getting tricky, and even more so when reading something from the late baroque age.

My question is has language always evolved and changed as rapidly as it seems in the later centuries of the millennia? Because it certainly seems as if language isn't changing as fast anymore.

Regular bathing was much less common before modern times. Did hunters bathe before hunting, attempt to cover their scent in other ways, and/or only hunt downwind?

People are pretty stinky animals and many game animals are pretty good smellers. How did hunters get around this?

Was biological warfare used in the Hundred Years' war?

I came across this earlier today and there was some debate as to whether or not this was actually done.

My question is two-fold.

  1. Did archers in particular, but also swordsman, cover their weapons with substances with the intention of causing disease?

  2. Since germ theory wasn't introduced until the 16th century, and not universally recognized until the 17th century ... did they know what they were doing? If so, how?

Is "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari worth a read?

Hi all, I asked this question on r/askscience but I figured this would be a more appropriate place to ask this question.

I've listened to the author on an NPR interview and skimmed through the book on my iPhone's iBook app. It looked interesting but has anyone here read it? Is it accurate? Brilliant? Boring?

What was the predominant reaction of the Russian public to the dissolution of the Soviet Union?

I find this topic fascinating. After decades of working to establish dominance against the USA, and then struggling to merely stay alive in its final years, the USSR collapses. If I'm an average Russian citizen in 1991, how does this information come to me, and how would I react to it? And how would years of absorbing Soviet-controlled media affect my impression of the end of the USSR?

I was reading a textbook and it said that Lenin's real last name was "Ilyich Ulyanov," but it didn't go into any detail on why he was called Lenin. Why did he chose to change his name to Lenin, or why do we call him that?

Cellar door folk art. Jumbo the elephant and two African-American characters. What is this and what are it's origins? http://imgur.com/4kowtLF

I have a friend with a rather old home in Jordan, NY, with a basement (cellar) door with some very cool and interesting folk art depicted on either side. We are speculating on where this might have come from and the possible age of the art and door. It looks like it was re-purposed, we think around the early 20th century. We know the house was picked up and moved to it's current location during the construction of the NYS Thruway (I-90) around 1948-1954. But this door seems much older than that. We were thinking these might be from a travelling circus wagon, considering the Jumbo the elephant was a popular circus attraction at one point and the people in the image seem to be dressed in formal attire. Images in link. Thanks for the helphttp://imgur.com/4kowtLF

Just how much communication was there between intellectuals before the twentieth century?

I'm taking a history of maths course, and at the beginning of the chapter on the 20th century, it states that there was more work published in the 20th century than all the previous centuries combined. I understand this might be totally due to the ease of publication near the end of the century, but the question I have is, how much communication did intellectuals (math, physics, philosophy, ect) have with each other in each century (100s,200s,300s,...,1700s,1800s)?
