Couldn't the US just drop the atomic bomb in the bays in front of the two Japanese cities? Couldn't that have had the same effect without killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people's lives?

I've always wondered if the US could have dropped the bombs just off the shore of the cities and have the same effect?

Hakka walled villages - Similar structures in other cultures?

I am currently doing some research on the Hakka walled villages, or tulou as they are often called. I am just curious if similar structures, in design and/or significance, exist in other cultures throughout the world?

Did the Union have a "Plan B" in case they lost the American Civil War?

Over this past weekend, I went to see Gone With The Wind with my girlfriend. I had never seen it, and she has seen it multiple times. Her family is from the South, while I am from the Northeast, though currently we live in the Pacific Northwest. We often get into discussions about Southern culture versus the rest of the country, and occasionally Gone With The Wind comes up. It's her mother's favorite movie, and something her mother points to it as an example of the beauty and "honor" of the old Southern way of life. I don't believe her mother is racist or pro-slavery in any way. She's actually quite knowledgeable about Southern and Civil War history; much more so than I. However, I do believe she is sincerely confused about the South and its place in the history of the United States.

My girlfriend and I left the movie and got into another discussion about Southern culture and history, and it made me wonder if anyone in the Union government considered what the country would be like without the South as a part of it. Would they try to form trade relations? Would they attempt to replace the agrarian economy by developing the Western territories differently? Was it really such a tremendous blow to lose the cotton and tobacco industries that they couldn't be compensated for some other way?

I've searched this subreddit a bit, but didn't really find the kind of answers I was looking for, so I would appreciate any help from you fine folks, even if it's just a book to read further on the topic.

Thank you.

Would the Vikings actually slaughter women and children?

Just wouldn't make much sense. If the objective is a lightning quick raid why take the time to kill everyone? Just kill those who resist and take all the valuables.

Austrio-Hungarian, Bohemian, Polish Music from 1900-1910's? Help!

Hey, I'm planning on writing a book, and I'm in my very early planning stages. It will be set in a fictional faction which broke off from the Austrio-Hungarian empire. Of course, before writing anything down, I need to learn more about the 19th-20th century cultures of the empire. I find the music hard to come by, as I can't really seem to find anything helpful on youtube. If you know anything on this subject, or can direct me to some useful website, that'd be much appreciated. I have already posted this on r/history and they directed me here. Thanks a lot! Marcin.

Did Hitler really fake his suicide?

A friend of mine sent me this link and in the article it lists this link from fbi.gov as one of it's sources. It looks legitimate to me but aside from this site and my friend I haven't heard or seen anything else about it. So my question is: Did Hitler really fake his suicide and live after the end of WW2?

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, France had a lower birth rate than the rest of Europe. Why?

I've been browsing the demography charts at Gapminder, and noticing something unusual: starting in the middle of the Napoleonic Wars, about 1810, the French birthrate starts to slide, and stays unusually low compared to the rest of Europe well until the 20th century. What happened?

I've read a little on the Eastern Front, and it seems that both Hitler and Stalin made some blunders by getting involved with military operations, but I haven't heard of anyone else doing anything similar. If they did, how successful/unsuccessful was it?
