What do we know about how people kept and cared for pet dogs in ancient Rome? And what sort of breeds did they like?

Did any "exotic" breeds get shipped in from remote corners of the empire as especially extensive pets? Were there pet stores in the major cities? Did anyone make a living breeding and selling dogs? How would someone in the city even get a dog in the first place?

During the Napoleonic Wars, what sort of training were enlisted soldiers and officers given upon their joining the army?

We've all heard about how hardcore modern military training is(I.e. Full Metal Jacket), but what did the training of Napoleonic-era soldiers include? I've also heard that nobles with enough money could raise their own regiments - did they have to undergo some kind of officership training, or was it expected that all gentlemen could lead men into battles and understand tactics?

What was the relationship between Natural Magic and chymistry/alchemy?

Giambattista Della Porta wrote about natural magic as the practical aspect of natural philosophy in his Magia Naturalis, and yet his text contains numerous chemical recipes for medicines, cosmetics, &c. These concoctions have a significant overlap with contemporary chemistry or alchemy. Was there any broader connection between the two studies in the 16th/17th century?

Why do some historians refer to 1500-1700 as "The Long Middle Ages"?

Isn't that just the early modern era? Why make the distinction? I realize it's kind of arbitrary, but I don't understand why someone would choose one description over the other. Is it at all controversial?

I'm asking because "The Long Middle Ages" was the topic I was assigned for my Survey of Western History Class (kind of broad). If anyone could also suggest any sources that talk in great detail about this idea, I'd really appreciate it.

Was the internment of German soldiers and civilians post war (the second one) on a large scale by the allies real or a conspiracy to defame the allies?

I had come across a wikipedia article when reading about Nazi Germany for my high school history class when I found a page about the detainment of millions of Germans and their use as forced labour to rebuild Europe post war not just by the Soviet Union but the Western Allies too. I brought it up in class and my teacher, a pretty square guy who doesn't seem all that in to the nitty gritty of his courses and likes to define the well known paradigms of who was good and bad in the periods, immediately shot it down as a conspiracy. Is my teacher just close minded or was this a legitimate issue?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forced_labor_of_Germans_after_World_War_II (pretty sure the article's been updated since, lessening the figures from much more extreme numbers, U.K with 4,000,000 prisoners to 400,000 etc.)

How sex was depicted in other ancient cultures?

As far as I read, I remember sex and nudity being described in ancient texts (thinking of the Bible or accounts from the fist Europeans to arrive in the new world) with special care of not being overly explicitly nor vulgar.

Now, how was sex recorded in other cultures in the ancient times? Would you have examples of accounts that would be significantly more "straight to the point"?

When did platinum take on its popular status as "more valuable than gold?"

I'm interested in the impression of platinum in the popular consciousness, not it's actual value on the open market. Has platinum always been considered the "most premium" metal, or was this due to a particular historical event or marketing campaign?

I read that the Jews requested help from the Nazis to protect them from the Hungarians during the battle of Budapest, can you provide more information?

I was reading a post on Quora about the battle of Budapest. The writer make says: "At the same time there were a large number of Jews imprisoned in Budapest and used as slave labor. Much is said about the brutality of the Germans, but the Hungarians were worse. At one point, the leader of the Jewish prisoners actually appealed to the Germans for relief from the Hungarians. "

Are you please able to provide more information about the jews appealing to Germans for help?

Thank you
