I recently read about Martin Luther King Jr's mother being assassinated by a black man after her involvement with the civil rights movement prior to her sons death and just interested in reading up on similar people.

hey sorry if this is a weird question but i think i once saw this on TIL it was about 3 sisters that would use a tactic of one sister would distract the enemy while the other would turn off their engine and glide over the enemy city to bomb them, i hope i am not too vague, i know there's even a song about them but i can't find that either.

It is usually said that in foreign policy the Democrats are the “doves” – they prefer negotiation to war – and the Republicans are the “hawks” – they prefer an aggressive foreign policy. Looking at the 7 presidents (skipping Ford) during the Cold War, from Truman to Reagan (4 Democrats, 3 Republicans), to what extent is this really true?

Not a salad like "any assortment of vegetables" But our typical conception of a base of a large amount of lettuce with raw vegetables and dressing.
I was just thinking that people probably didn't just have tons of lettuce sitting around for most of history, and even if they did making something like that isn't really a good way to get your calories for the day which I feel like was more of a concern in the past. So when did this development happen?

The US had already put in place a trade embargo, and in '86 they began shipping Stinger missiles, which quickly ramped up the effectiveness of Afghan fighters and ultimately resulted in the loss of over 450 Soviet aircraft. How did the Soviet Union react to this escalation? Did they threaten the US?

I really hope that I have posted this in the right place!
So, I'm doing an undergrad. degree in History in the UK and I'm in my third year. I have chosen to write my dissertation (10,000 words) on death in Ancient Egypt and I was just wondering if any historians out there know of any books/websites/journals/documentaries that I should take a look at.
My university doesn't have any lecturers that specialise in Egyptology so I've been placed with a guy that specialises in Religious Studies and Theology. It's fantastic that he wants to be my mentor but he doesn't know much about the topic.
I know it sounds crazy to pick a topic that no one can help me with but I've always been fascinated with the Ancient Egyptians and how they perceived the afterlife. If there are any Egyptologists out there that have written some material on this subject or know of someone that has, please link me! It will be much appreciated! Thanks :D

I've seen this post reblogged around my Tumblr feed from time to time, and it claims that Mesperyian, a mythological figure of some kind or other, was Hades's "most beloved daughter."
I've never heard of this supposed goddess nor could I find anymore information about her, not even on Wikipedia, so I'm willing to bet that she's either a) made up (because tumblrites do that), b) a minor goddess of the Greek pantheon, or c) a minor goddess that was erroneously lumped in with the Greek pantheon (again, because tumblrites do that). Any ideas?
tl;dr Is Mesperyian an actual Greek goddess, or is my tumblr feed bullshitting me again?

By that I mean conscious efforts to be good stewards towards our environment and a recognition that environmental pollutants are a problem.

I have often heard that Jews were treated poorly in pre-Soviet Russia and in the early days of the Soviet Union. However, I have not seen a thorough account of anti-Semitism in pre-WWII Soviet society. Was there blatant official discrimination toward Jews as a matter of Soviet policy, similar to that which took place in Nazi Germany? Or was the discrimination more "informal" in nature (i.e., not officially condoned but widespread among Soviet communities)? Were Jews treated better or worse than during the days of the Russian Empire?

Was it accepted or just known and not talked about? Did they think she is your slave so you can do with her whatever you want?

I am mostly referring to the civilizations in South Asia. I couldn't find anything about this on the FAQs and on google. I was just wondering if being in the Tropics and Equatorial regions made the ancient civilization feel "safe" and not wanting to go out of their region.

How would handicapped and crippled warriors be treated?
EDIT: To clarify, and taking from /u/elkoubi post below
"How would a warrior who survived his wounds and was no longer strong enough to serve as a warrior would be treated? Would those men be disrespected as men who failed to die as warriors? Would they be respected as hardy and proven hard to kill? Would they still be expected to die in battle to gain entrance to Valhalla and glory"

So and so writes that 2,000,000 soldiered battled against the Greeks or King Hwatnot had an army of tens of thousands riding horseback across the land.
Really?
How accurate are these estimates? How did pre-Industrial Revolution kingdoms and such amass such large armies of viable and fit soldiers? How did Alexander manage so many troops, plus logistics and tactics and such?
