Was there an actual Assassin order? If so where were they all located? Why and who did they assassinate? Did they have their own ranking system? Who was their Leader?

Did any medieval literature or mythology have vampires vs werewolves or is that just something modern authors and moviemakers have made up? Were there cultures that believed in both?

I imagine that other countries had embassies in Berlin if they were not at war with the country, and especially so Japan. What happened to those personnel when the Soviets attacked the city?

I'm interested in the whole English Reformation period, but especially the Civil War(s), Parliament, the Protectorate, the Restoration, the Glorious Revolution, conflicts in Scotland & Ireland, etc. I plan to read a lot more in the "long 17th century" but am hoping for some recommendations.
The thing is, to be honest, I have more of a layman's interest than a historian's interest. I've read through most of Woolrych's magisterial Britain in Revolution, and while it provides a great overview, I think what I'm really looking for are the more detailed, up close and personal and, well, entertaining looks at the period. Are there any "great reads" or "must reads" that are filled with detail, great writing and strong narrative? Any titles (or even articles) you've been known to recommend to non-specialists purely for their quality as writing? I'm looking for high-end entertainment value, narrative power, amazing prose (or poetry); basically the great stories of the era well told.
I've though about but haven't committed to reading Pepys' Diary, for example, or at least excerpts. Looks lively. Looking through the Cromwell Association's list of recommended books, I notice they say there are a number of local, town, county and regional studies and I wonder if any of those might be interesting to a non-specialist like myself. I've gone as far afield as picking up Walter Scott's Waverley, with its cavalier nostalgia and Jacobite politics; that one I'll eventually get to.
I did graduate work in English lit, though not in this period, but I have some experience with Milton, Marvell and Aphra Behn among the era's literary figures. Blair Worden's Literature and Politics in Cromwellian England looks interesting. But I'm also potentially interested in military studies, espionage, politics, religious beliefs, economics, culture, biographies of major figures, etc. The more I get into it the more I realize how huge the subject really is, and the more I feel at a loss as to where to go next.
Here's the short list of what I've read or have, to save you time, though I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on these as well: Austin Woolrych Britain in Revolution; Hill Century of Revolution; Hill The World Turned Upside Down (haven't finished); Jordan and Walsh The King's Revenge (haven't finished); Braddick God's Fury, England's Fire (haven't finished). I also have the complete works of Milton like I said, plus some Aphra Behn.

I would like to start this post by stating that I am not a holocaust denier. There is overwhelming evidence that it happened and to ignore that evidence, in my opinion, is delusional and illogical.
That being said, I have been trying to figure out just how many Jews were killed in the holocaust.
Why?
A friend of mine was linked this map. He found it interesting and wanted to pursue the sources but was shocked when he found non-credible links. One of the links are dead and the other leads to a site which does not cite a primary source (and the source it does cite is also suspect as it cites no source).
Puzzled I have also been trying to figure out how we have come to the estimate of 6-10 million Jews dying.
For the 6 million number I discovered that it is based off a book written by Lucy Dawidowicz titled The War Against the Jews. As the article says, she came to the 6 million figure by researching birth and death records and came up with the figure of 5,933,900.
When I research this to find out how sound her science is I find bias articles on both sides.
Personally, I am skeptical with how accurate the number is (though I may be less if I could figure out how she did it). How many of those Jews she is counting be displaced or dead in a non-holocaust related incident?
Basically my question is:
How many Jews were killed in the holocaust (approximately).
How do we know that?
How credible is Lucy Dawidowicz's number?
Thanks to all who read this giant amount of text. And to those who lost family/ancestors in the holocaust, I apologize if my question comes off as insensitive.

On Facebook, some conservative friends bashed the president for comparing the crusades carried by the Christians to what ISIS is doing now. I want to know if this comparison is more or less true.

This stems from a recent argument I came across where someone, clearly pushing a bit of a racist agenda, used the proliferation of inbreeding amongst former slave populations to justify their belief that African-Americans are genetically inferior. I know there was forced breeding amongst select slaves, and other sexual violations like that, but it just doesn't make any sense to me from a slave owners perspective to practice inbreeding amongst their slaves. Even before the discovery of DNA people must have had some understanding of the negative effects of inbreeding both physically and mentally, right? Is there any historical or genealogical evidence that inbreeding was a widespread practice?

What took them so long if presumably they were just like us physically. Couldn't someone had thought about using beasts of burden to do some work, say 100k years ago?

I was reading a Noir novel the other day, and the main character interacts on several occasions with "the hotel dick" regarding a case he's working on. How did this work? Did hotels have in-house private investigators? And what was their role? What did the average day look like for these men?

Growing up, we obliviously learned that they were treated horribly in the South. We also learned that the North wasn't that great either. Despite the absence of Jim Crow, there were still many discriminatory policies (redlining, blockbusting, etc.).
That being said, I don't recall learning about how they were treated out west. I've heard anecdotes about black families moving to California and being treated much better, but did this apply to most black people that lived there?

Been looking into a big series or book that may cover this, maps would be great! I have a few books that cover these topics but usually skim over great lengths of time. Especially interested in Mesopotamia and the civilizations that existed leading up to the area as well as those formed after. Sorry if this is an extremely general question.
