I understand that a tent party of 8 men was called a contubernium, and there were ten such to a century, commanded by a centurion. But I can't seem to find a source why it was only 80 men and not a 100 as per the title would suggest. Any ideas?

Things like oil products and metals were rationed during the wars to free them up for military use. What other strategies were used to increase the supply of these materials? Were existing vehicles stripped and recycled for their metal or re-purposed for military use? Were mining and refining facilities targets for capture by advancing forces? Were previously protected forests allowed to be cut down? I'm interested in the topic in general so book or article recommendations would be very welcome! :)
Apologies if this has been asked previously, my searches gave little other than food rationing questions.

In less than 250 years, the US has become a world power economically, militarily, and culturally. How and when did this happen?

I have been interested in the real genghis khan and his differences from the monster that is pop culture Genghis Khan.
I would like nonfiction by a historian of course, but I got an audiobook "Genghis" by Conn Iggulden. Only listened to the beginning. Is it any good? Litterally all I know about this fella is that he born Temujin. Trying to be more educated in Eastern History! Thank you for spending time to read this, btw.

I've heard that Stalin was responsible for it, but is there actual evidence for this?
Thanks

I have a few questions on wine in Classical Greece. How different from modern wine did it taste? Do we know how strong (alcohol by volume) wine was before it was cut with water? What were the atributes that were valued, and which regions were considered to be the best? Feel free to answer the same questions for Rome.

I have the impression that many tales about witches are about them stealing milk and butter, and sometimes going to great lengths to do this (see "Tilberi"). Or they bewitch animals to stop giving milk (and give blood instead). Or they make milk go sour. Or they do something else involving milk and butter...
At least European witches seem to do this, since I found quite a few examples in my German mother tongue, but next to nothing in English.
How come? Was butter that important and expensive during "the time of the witches"? Is this something about witches being female and doing or ruining woman's work with magic?

Taking an ancient western history class we learned about sea people that invaded the Egyptians. Who were they and where did they come from? How did they manage to take down a civilization as big as Egypt without writing down some form of history?

Did this ever happen?
For example, Elizabeth I. Would it have been more preferable for her to 'adopt' a child to pass down the throne rather than letting it go to James?
