For any Medieval historians, do you remember a tale of a Syrian doctor that treated people, but who was overruled by a Christian doctor and killed the patients?

Not sure of further details. I remember the christian doctor chopped off a knights leg and cut a crucifix into the head of a woman and rubbed salt into it.

Would Iran be a different Iran today, if the 1953 overthrow of the Iranian government never happened?

I have been reading about this lately as i find it very interesting, and I knew little about this before.

From what i understand the British had control over the Iranian oil industry since 1913, before Persia became known as Iran, through the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. This was the reason for the coup because Mohammad Mosaddeq wanted to nationalize the country's oil industry.

Although I dont know much about Mosaddeq, from what ive read, it seems like he wanted to democratize Iran, to some extenct!? His administration introduced a range of progressive social and political reforms such as social security, rent control, and land reforms. After the coup and the Shah assumed power as had been planned, the country would be under a dictator for nearly 26 years before the Iranian revolution in 1979

My question is if we would see a different Iran today if Mosaddeq had not been stripped of Power and replaced with the Shah?

I apologize in advance for the lack of information and poorly written text (im not a native english speaker). I might be wrong, but I would really appriciate if someone would clarify what im thinking here.

Was John the Baptist an Essene? How did he fit into the religious landscape of his time?

There are some similarities between John the Baptist and the Essences - ritual bathing (common at the time), living in the desert, apocalyptic theology. Are these superficial? How common were these features at the time (especially apocalyptic theology)?

[Meta] can we include an online etymological dictionary in the book list?

i've noticed a couple of recent questions recently that could be easily answered with the help of an etymological dictionary (for instance "when did the word fa***t become a curse word). I think it would be useful to add such a work to answer questions before they are asked.

Thoughts? also which ones should be recommended or should the oed be recommended instead of an online one?

Did most "common people" know what date it was on a given day during the middle ages?

If not, did they have some other sort of system for tracking the seasons and years?

By "common people", I mean people who were unable to read, or to need to know the date all the time for their vocation.

I'm also curious to know whether or not this changed over time.

How did the the founders of the three Abrahamic religions convince so many people to follow them?

I've been struggling with my own faith and this question keeps coming up.

Someone just tells you they spoke to God or angels and they believed him?

Is there a historical account, not in the torch, bible or qu'ran that explains why so many people followed Moses, Jesus and Muhammad?

Are we certain that Smedley Butler's accounts of what happened in 1033 are true? And if so, what would have happened had the Business Plot have been successful in 1933?

Assuming that, say, Butler had agreed to help the conspirators like Prescott Bush in the coupe, and successfully ousted FDR (with FDR dying in the process or otherwise, you guys decide, you're the experts) with Butler at the helm, what would happen exactly? Would Butler and co. have an election, or simply put one of them in the POTUS seat instead? Or would they do away with the POTUS, Congress, and the SCOTUS, and re-do the whole of the US government?

In any case, would there be a mass rebellion/revolution against this? After all, despite my personal dislike, FDR was very popular at the time, as was, you know... not being a dictatorship. Would there perhaps even be a civil war in the end?

And of course, would we have ended up getting involved in WWII under a Smedley Butler (and co.) leadership, or not? Would we be involved faster, or later? Would we have been militarizing previous to involvement, unlike what FDR did?

Those, amongst many others, are just some questions I (and others that I've seen across the web) have about what would've happened, had Butler not "taddled" on the conspirators. Any insight you guys have would be great, and any answers to what I asked, and even things I didn't ask would be wonderful. I realize a lot of this has to do with theories, which are of course always debatable. I also understand you may not be able to provide links and sources on everything you predict, as it 1) isn't a widely-covered topic and 2) is, again, entirely theoretical. That being said, speaking for myself, I'd love to hear anything anyone has to say regarding predictions, first-person accounts, and so-on involving this incident in history.

Note to admins: I realize this may be more geared towards /r/HistoricalWhatIf, but for some reason it's private (?), and also, I find this community to be, by far, the most reliable when it comes to things like this, and definitely the most educated. If you'd like me to take it down, just tell me (or do it yourselves, it is your subreddit, I suppose).

EDIT: I obviously meant 1933, sorry about that. Also, my title was repetitive. Again, sorry.

How did Japanese chroniclers portray early Christian converts?

before and after the purge of Christians and missionaries under the Tokugawa Shogunate. for instance (as an example):

how did the fact that many of the leaders of the vanguard of the invasion of Korean impact later assessments of the war and those

don't feel constrained by that specific example and honestly i would also be interested to hear more about Christianity in other East Asian societies.

How True is the Idea of the Evolving "Ideal" Women

Recently, a few friends of mine have posted this particular video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrp0zJZu0a4#t=97

It depicts a number of historical time frames as well as geographies, and the "ideal women" within that time frame. The video seems to use the most common female figure in art of that time period and geographic location to presume that that womanly figure was ideal.

I realize that there is the gaping assumption that what is depicted in art does not necessarily mean ideal, but I was wondering if we can put that assumption aside for a second, and ask if the "ideal body type" for a woman has indeed changed over time (based on location) or if it is more just a change in how women are depicted in art.

Otherwise, is art imitating life, or is art simply evolving? If it was evolving, what was the reason?

Are there normal societal behaviors that signal major wars are coming? How early can major wars predicted?

I heard a theory a while back (NPR or BBC? It was a reputable source) that suggested that growing nationalism in China may soon put the country in a position to start world war three. That got me wondering what society looks like leading up to major wars. Are there normally telltale signs that war is coming? Or is every war so different that it's hard to predict? Would we know if we were headed for WWIII right now?
