Most Greek/Roman gods and mythological characters are more widely known by their original Greek names. Why isn't that the case with Herakles?

I mean not like they had strict border crossings. I mean we cant even quarantine a nation nowdays with all of our technology.

Anyone got any info on the first historical record of cheese showing up in history? When, where, by whom?

I'm eating cheese and crackers right now and I just got to wondering what we know about it, if anything at all.

After about 8,000 soldiers were captured, they were paroled and I assume sent back to England. What prevented the British from surrendering early, to prevent a devastating battlefield loss, and reneging on their surrender? I guess this goes for waving the white flag as well and just continuing to fire. I assume it mostly has to do with etiquette but would love to know more.

I've seen people have shirts, flags and all sorts of novelty items with his likeness.

I recently learned that the United Nations had a peacekeeping army stationed in Rwanda at the time the genocide began. Apparently, these men were equipped to stop the genocide, but were not allowed to commit violence to protect the Tutsis because the Security Council denied the UN forces in Rwanda the use of their weapons to kill.

My Question is: Why? Did they not understand the scale of the genocide? Why didn't the UN soldiers disobey orders? What is the United States' role in this, being the primary leader of the United Nations.

Conveniently, the genocide occurred just over 20 years ago, so any answers that don't break the 20 year rule are greatly appreciated!

I just finished the book and thought it was amazing. However, it also seems like he has used figurative literary. devices in the book as a way to build up certain figures. Did the author have to sacrifice any historical accuracy to to make this book

All I seem to find is fiction. I just find it super fascinating that two superpowers were sailing ships out to conquer and battle over those little islands.

I guess what I'm after is 'real' pirate stories, but in a less romanticized way.

What makes a language Indo-European? Persian and German are both Indo-European but have no connection when comparing. Was there once 1-2 main language spoken in a certain place that gradually broke apart?

Also do any of you play them?

What changed between the two wars to cause such disparity between the way POW's were treated? Was there cultural affiliation between Germany and Japan, or was this more related to the rise of Bushido and the radicalisation of the last Emperor?

Just to give some examples of why I say this:

I still don't know how Africa, South America, Turkey, the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia participated in WW1. Of course they probably provided supplies and some volunteer troops, but when has that not happened in any of the past wars? What was the effect of WW1 on China? No clue tbh. What about INdia? No idea. That's like 2/5ths of the world which I have no idea how they participated in the world war.

As for the second WW, why does it "start" at 1939 and not 1937 when Japan attacked China? I mean America didn't even declare war on Japan until 1941. The two wars in Europe and Asia were essentially cut off. Volunteers aside they're pretty much two separate wars until 1941.

I've been looking up pictures of 19th century Londoners, but I have no idea how to tell if they are from 1810, 1840, or 1870.
