Specifically, I am wondering how cannibalism of a fellow French soldier might have been punished during the retreat from Moscow. Would the commanding officer have personally seen to their execution, or have passed it off to a subordinate?

You keep hearing about all these Roman orgies all the time, and yet the topic of STDs conspicuously never really comes up like it does when people talk about 18th century Europe. I know HIV and syphilis couldn't have been around, but were there no STDs really to speak of?

How was he able to predict a swift victory over France, a major military power of that time? How did he expect a similar result as in the conquest of Poland, whereas his Generals where a lot less optimistic?

I just read an article cleverly titled 'Writing's on the wall' (in a dead tree newspaper so no link). It's a pretty common genre of article though reporting that our children aren't reaching literacy standards.

In my experience these sort of articles always seem to compare test results to an absolute, possibly arbitrary, standard. This article in particular blames teaching methods introduced in the 1970s for poor literacy attainment.

Holding children to a higher standard of literacy is probably a good thing and identifying ways of improving teaching of literacy certainly is. I want to put this issue into some sort of historical context though. My question is: Is there any good evidence that literacy has actually declined or are we merely failing to meet a higher standard?

It seems as if a lot of the current day issues in the middle east are caused by these groups not liking each other and wanting to be part of each other's government. The division of these areas by the French and British is blamed for a lot of the unrest. But were these groups peaceful before when they were all ruled under one empire? If so, why is there more unrest now?
