I mean really? Why not jus 1/2? 3/5 seems like a pretty annoying number to use in calculations by hand and 1/2 really isn't that different it's just easier to use

So like the title says, my grandfather confiscated this knife from a Native American who was a bit inebriated and was talked into picking a fight with one of the soldiers. I'm not sure where he was stationed at during the time a lot of the details of this encounter are lost. I know that he spent a lot of his tour in southern France. But this knife is really the only tangible thing I have left from his history apart from a few old photos. If anyone can tell me something about this knife I'd appreciate it.
If you look closely at the blade there is something written on it. I honestly can not read it at all and I'm fairly certain it's not even English. I took as detailed of pictures as I could with my SLR and I have RAW copies as well if that makes a difference. I'm curious if anyone could read it, perhaps that will give some more detail on it.

I'm interested in more info on how the rebuidling of Germany (e.g. Berlin) was handled from a practical point of view. The organization, the details. Who did what, etc. Any books to recommend?
And also general logistics, I'm planing to start with "Supplying War", but if you know of anything else, please enlighten me. Preferrably WW2 (or newer).

What led to Russia, as well as the former Soviet Union, on such a different path from rest of Europe and the west? After all, they had all the possibilities in terms of natural resources, population size etc. as the rest of Europe, and were located within Europe itself.
The rest of Europe developed (more or less) into friendly, highly schooled and very democratic countries.
So why did Russia alone develop into an undemocratic, oppressive and by economic and academic measures, uninnovative country?
I know a lot of the eastern bloc were like that, too, but for reasons of simplicity I'm putting that down to Russian influence.

My grandfather died when I was fairly young. I've been meaning to start a project about both my grandafther's military service. I have one grandfather still alive and am currently building my interview for him. However, all I have for my late paternal grandfather is his military file jacket (which is very incomplete) and the name of the submarine he was on circa 1945. The USS Croaker. Wikipedia was fairly helpful. What other sources could I reference for ship manifests and possible records and locations of his sub. I've asked my grandma and unfortunately she was rather unhelpful (just because she didn't know all to much about his time on board). Any help appreciated.

As a Nevadan, I have long heard the debate about the first town between Genoa or Dayton and the question of what actually constitutes a town or settlement. I am curious if any one has an opinion on this long running debate.

I sometimes think that the Italian Campaign is not given enough attention compared to the Western Front, the Eastern Front or the African Campaign. Is this understandable? How significant was the Italian Campaign to the allied victory?

This was discussed briefly in another thread recently, and I was thinking more about it so I decided to make a question dedicated to it to see if someone has any serious knowledge on the issue.
The premise is that after the dissolution of the third reich, numbers of higher ranking Nazis fled to various places (primarily S. America, Spain, and middle eastern countries like Egypt). Similarly, before and during WW2, lots of German artists and architects who would have been described as degenerate fled as well. Many went to America, but there was a group who ended up in Tel Aviv and developed The White City to Bauhaus principles.
So my curiosity is whether or not this divide of Nazis and German ex-pats had any impact later on to the tensions in this large, complex region. Alternatively, ignoring the bauhaus, did the influx of Nazis alone create the groundwork for future tension? Or is all this superfluous and tensions developed for their own reasons outside of this footnote?

I've read a couple of articles about anime that attempt to explain way the fact that westerners don't think anime characters look asian by claiming that Japanese culture doesn't focus on the same racial characteristic (or imagined characteristic) we do. If that's the case how come the characters on pre-war propaganda posters do look Asian to a stereotypical western eye?

There're clearly a lot of awesome arguments and collections of sources and reseach done in answering many /r/AskHistorians posts. Is it not possible to make more of that? If particular arguments are novel and well-supported, are they not something that should be published or otherwise disseminated to the broader community of historians?
Edit: I'm not proposing that someone just grab high-rated comments and paste them into a journal with no intervening steps. I'm proposing that some of the best commenters and writers form an editorial board and do plenty of curating and peer-reviewing and copyediting.

This question is inspired by these Soviet Animations of Ray Badbury Stories, which was posted in /r/literature.
The US and Japan are the countries I know of that are most famous for animation. Before seeing the above videos I had no awareness of animated films in the Soviet Union. So, how did Soviet animation compare to work in the US and Japan in terms of artistic style, audience reception, popularity, and production?
