Playing the Total War series, I've found that the one sure counter to horse archers is large numbers of missile infantry protected by spearmen to counter a charge. Did the opponents of the Huns, Mongols and Turks (to name a few) attempt to counter the horse archer's supremacy in the field with infantry archers, and how successful were they in doing so?

I was reading a book a few years ago (can't remember the name or author) about a roman centurion. Characters in the book would quite frequently either kill themselves, or be ordered to kill themselves (often for VERY petty reasons). How accurate is this?

There is an urban legend from Alabama that German subs were able to beach in order for the sailors to visit relatives. There is a population of German-Americans in Baldwin County, which sits on Mobile Bay and the Gulf. Supposedly, this happend during WWII, but I have never seen any actual proof and I google it from time to time when I think about. What say the experts?

Everything I read about the Native American peoples of the Great Plains is centered around their way of life after Europeans brought horses-- following buffalo herds, living in tipis, and so on. However, this is obviously a very small segment of history. How did they live before horses arrived? What types of shelters did they live in, what did they do for sustenance?

Most people I've posed this question to tell me the United States started showing signs of becoming an imperialist empire around the turn of the twentieth century, when they began dabbling in smaller wars and tweaking international policy to .

However, I recently read through a couple essays (Richard Drinnon's The Metaphysics of Empire Building: American Imperialism in the Age of Jefferson and Monroe // Patrick Wolfe's Settler Colonialism and the Elimination of the Native) that suggest these ideas of empire actually started forming with the 1790 Naturalization Act, where citizenship was limited to white Americans, and the 1830 Indian Removal Act, where Native American settlements were moved further west to accomodate American farmers and settlers.

Do you think there is an argument for American Empire/Imperialism forming during the early 19th century, or not until after the Civil War?

I heard from an old German sailor that the primary means to find your location in the ocean (without GPS of course) would be the stars, the maps of the general flow of the tides and maps of the ocean depths. I recall reading a story of a U-Boat Ace sailing up to Scotland and attacking a RN convoy there. A feat his peers thought impossible because of all the sand banks en-route. Was there any other means for them to navigate?

Is it simply because they invaded Kuwait? If so, why did we care about Kuwait? Or is it deeper than that?

Were the countries ever allies? Or was each country getting something out of their relationship in the 80s: Iran not winning the war against Iraq and Iraq not losing against Iran and no actual common goal or shared values?

So I've recently began my undergraduate and I'm minoring in history. The topic for the majority of year 1 is the Vikings and how their role shaped the world.

While I respect the topic and can see it's relevancy and importance in the role of studying history, I simply just cannot find it interesting, which leads to me lacking in the study department. So, assuming all the historians that are here have more than likely have to have had studied something that bored them to pieces, is the best way to solve this problem?
