How did Hannibal manage to pull off the victory at Cannae?

So much of this battle absolutely fascinates me. How was it possible to communicate intricate, sequenced movements in the chaos of battle; how much was the game plan before and how much was made up on the fly; how much of his army was in on the bigger picture; why was attacking the flanks so devastating (couldn't the Romans just turn 90 degrees to face their attackers?); why couldn't the Romans break out of the envelopment?

What Catholic Church ideals did Martin Luther disagree with?

I'm being assigned to do a play that would preach Luther's beliefs. I was planning on having my play consist of God sitting in on mass and critiquing the priest's teachings. More specifically, I was looking for something the priest could say, followed by "In the name of the Lord." And God would reply with "I never said that." But really, any knowledge about Luther would be great.

How did WWI artillery spotters communicate firing information from airplanes to the ground?

I was listening to an episode of Hardcore History and the host was talking about how useful airplanes were for artillery spotting. He then mentioned how there was then the difficulty of communicating this info with the ground, but didn't elaborate. Can anyone help here? I couldn't find much info but it sounds like they didn't have wireless radios most of the time.

Why did the Resistance movement of Poland failed to resist the overtake of URSS in 1945 ?

I saw a discussion on this topic in /r/TIL and I was more curious about it.

To add more details to my questions, I'm wondering:

  • What led Poland to become part of URSS/Communist regime

  • Didn't they have Polish people who disagreed with this and if so what happened? Did they have a chance to argue or to fight against the idea of annexing Poland to URSS?

The wikipedia page about the Polish Resistance Movement is a bit hard to understand when it comes to why did Poland become part of the URSS...

Thank you in advance!

In an effort to be able to read more history, I've been learning French and I believe I'm at the level to attempt to read my original goal: history written in French.

Any recommendations? Primary or secondary sources on the French Revolution or Napoleon would be absolutely wonderful. Or the Bourbon Dynasty. Or anything really.

Specifically fortifications meant to damage or destroy incoming hostile ships.

The Punic Wars must have involved a lot of navies landing troops, were there fortifications built to prevent or deter such landings? What about for use against Viking raiders during the 900s or to protect straight crossings later on?
