I have always heard that fermentation was the reason Egypt could support such a large population. I was wondering if anyone knows about the fermentation styles that existed and/or what they would have put in beer besides barley and water.

Wild yeast or would they create a semi-consistent culture like they do for sourdough?

Gruit for flavoring? But it surely would have been called something else... and hops weren't cultivated/in that region yet?

I want to know how a mad man could "legitimately" be elected as head of Germany.

I was around 11 on a trip to Japan when I learned that the Japanese people call it "Nippon" was us North Americans that gave them that name, till then I've always been wondering why in the english language have we not called places by how the natives call it themselves.

Since this question goes back to even when the romans were around and naming things (Still around today or not), that I'd find the best answear here.

My instinct says that it's easier for a country to call it's neighbers/foriegners by there own made up "name" in olden times. I mean not alot of people were in school or had jobs focused on international relations back in the day. But I would love to get a difinitive answear on this question that has bothered me for so long and why we haven't changed it.

Is there any trace of them today?

We're some brought back to Europe?

I have been reading a book by Timothy R. Pauketat called "Cahokia," about a Native American city called Cahokia on the Mississippi River.

My question is, why was Cahokia abandoned and depopulated? From what I've read, Cahokia was a powerful and populous city, with extensive agriculture, huge buildings, production of a lot of tools and pottery, and many other features. It lasted for over two hundred years, and was one of the biggest cities north of Mesoamerica. Yet Cahokia declined during the thirteenth century, to the point that eventually very few Native Americans lived in or around its ruins.

Why would such a large city be so completely abandoned? Was it war, disease, internal strife, ecological devastation, or some other cause? (Or a combination of these factors?)

Specifically, what did they do with/to the local populace?

The general perception is that the Arab world used to be the centre of culture and progress as compared to its European counterpart during the Middle Ages. I've heard the stories about how great Saladin was and how greed and ruthless some of the Crusaders were (e.g. the priests allowed to board the ships choosing to save gold instead of the lives of the peasants).

That's why I'd like to ask if this perception finds basis in reality. If so, I'd like to know what was the Arabs' perception of the Western invaders, specially in the view of a little reversal of roles that took place during the years.
