At first this sounds stupid, but why was US joining the Allies important to victory? I hear people say US industrial power was essential to victory but wasn't the US already supporting the other Ally powers with the Lend-Lease Act? Plus, didn't the Soviet/Germany fighting in East Europe make up something like 80% of the European theater fighting?

I'm trying to write a paper with a theme about political legitimacy, using William the Conqueror's England as a case study. This was at the suggestion of my professor, but I have never written any sort of history paper like that. All of the ones I've written up to this have just been like an analysis of events or something. So... any suggestions or tips on how I should go about this?

I am positive that i have heard Stephen Fry and Christopher Hitchens on separate occasions talk about some event that took place (i think in Portsmouth) were members of the segregated White US military refused to drink with black people. The UK pub-owners sided with the black people and there was a punch-up... or something like that?

Forty or fifty years ago, the Middle East was much more secular and westernized. What happened?

I'm interested in how historians tend to describe different post-Qin Chinese dynasties as different succeeding states (e.g. Ming Empire, Empire of the Great Qing, etc.). In contrast, European ruling families seem to be treated as succeeding regimes of the same state (e.g. York, Tudor, Stuart, but always the Kingdom of England).

Is this just a difference of each nation's historiography? Should I view Imperial China as one state with many ruling families, or as a historical period describing multiple states?

Following the recent events it really surprises me how much hostility there is in Russia against the rest of Europe, including their closest neighbors such as Ukraine, and despite the fact that the old communist regime is already long gone. Was it like this before the communists took over? Is there some sort of historic trend that keeps perpetuating Russia's self-isolation from the rest of Europe?

I lean towards no because of the lack of inherited institutions. Is anyone persuaded because of geography, demography, or other reasons?

Recently watched a documentary on the great Atlantic wall, where Hitler had the entire Atlantic coast of Europe basically turned into a bunker. The historians and military servicemen seemed to imply that the strategy in and of itself failed, because the allies simply chose an underdeveloped beach and walked right in.

When the allies invaded, the project was only like 35% complete. I am wondering, if it was complete, it seemed like it would have stopped any sea based invasion into France, but I am not sure if perhaps 100% completion was a ridiculous task in and of itself.

Did the USSR or other communist/socialist organizations internationally fund the IRA or instigate unrest in Northern Ireland? Did socialism/capitalism play an important role in the narratives of the conflict? I know there was a class element to the discourses but did that ever tie in to geopolitics?
