Obviously there's been a significant amount of pieces published comparing Napoleon Bonaparte to Julius Caesar, but I've been interested in seeing what kind of similarities exist between the two pairs of uncle and nephew. It's interesting, to me at least, seeing how the two pairs were similarly related, intermittent periods existed between the nephews' ascendency from the uncles', and at least three served on a triumvirate. I'm eager to know if any articles have been published or if anyone has more speculation or opinion on the comparison.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I can't think of anywhere else to go! I've been rereading Down and Out in London and Paris, in which money is very important with amounts listed out constantly, and I'd like to know how much is being referenced! The stories are set around 1927-1930 France, and some of the figures listed are living on 6 francs a day poorly, being paid 1000 francs a month, etc.

So when exactly did the trenches start? Is there any knowledge of who (which side) started the trenches first? Ex: if the central powers dig trenches and the entente finds them and the trenches. do they just figure, "well they have trenches lets do that too!" and the commander says, "yeah lets do that! sounds tactical!". it seems a little farfetched that there is no better option to me.

When and how did the culture divide between Normans and Sicilians dissipate? Or did it? I'm aware of Roger d'Hauteville's line of kings and the relative harmony between all of the cultures living on the island (Muslims, Greeks, Italians, Normans) but I imagine at some point the inhabitants (whether lord or commoner) began to think of themselves as more Italian than anything else. So when did the Normans, first mercenaries and then ruling elite/warrior class, stop identifying as Norman?

What style was popular for the white slave owner? In slave movies, you only hear the deep blues songs from slaves. Is this what slave owners listened to for entertainment or was there a different style of music? Where did they get their entertainment from?

I am a Black person and was talking about this with my Latino friend. I was thinking it is because we don't have money circulating within the black/latino communities. My friend added on that much of the work quality is poor because of poorer education/environment.

How/why does this happen, and how long does it take before it becomes buried to the point of being forgotten?

My history teacher recently said that King Philip signing the peace of Augsburg (which granted the various Spanish states' rulers the right to determine whether or not their regions would be Catholic or Protestant) was the first example in the history of the world of a government providing a piece of legislation which allowed for some religious freedom (though to a limiting degree). I was a bit skeptical of that claim (especially since she talked about the "Dark Ages" and how the Renaissance changed the period of stagnancy- something which I've read is relatively inaccurate)- it felt a little Eurocentric to me as well, as I would guess (possibly incorrectly) that other civilizations/societies in other parts of the world have had some form of [possibly limited] religious freedom present in legislation, in Europe or otherwise. Curious if you guys have anything to offer.
