I'm sure it was pretty recent but how did people discover time zones?

1. I had read that the Frisians were some of the most 'active' peoples/pirates during the Viking age? How true is that?
2. Why did they turn to piracy?
3. How were they viewed by Danes/Norse/Saxons?
4. Did they retain any sort of a uniquely Pagan identity?
5. What led to the End of the Viking age in Frisia?
6. How similar militarily were they to the Northmen? Did they use similar equipment?
7. Could the Northmen understand Frisian, or was Frisian and old Norse virtually unintelligible?
8. Was Ubba Lodbrokson actually a Frisian? Or was he Danish?
9. Were there uniquely Frisian ships? In other words, crews entirely manned by Frisians?
10. Following Verden, how many Saxons fled to Frisia? Did the two peoples merge following the massacre?

I usually just lurk, and couldn't find anyone previously asking this question, so I guess this is my cue to make an account :)

Mostly I'm just sick of people pointing the finger at white Americans for having an ugly history of slavery. But I know every group of people must have enslaved another at some point right?

Whenever I try to find information about "architecture from X historical period" I always find information/really awesome pictures of palaces, religious buildings, and soforth, but rarely very much about regular people's houses. Hence my question.

The kind of information I'm looking for includes:

• what kind of building materials people used (and how well they kept out the elements.)
• whether they had separate rooms for sleeping, eating, cooking, etc.
• whether/what kind of furniture they had for the above-mentioned activities.
• the plumbing situation (i.e. was there any/what did they do instead?)
• who would have lived there (i.e. parents and children? extended family? multiple families sharing a home?)
• how much discrepancy was there between "regular" homes and the homes of the wealthy/ruling class? To put another way - did this time and place have palaces/villas and huts/shacks, and not much in between? Or was there more variety than that?
• anything else interesting you can think of.
